Poker Poker - better than pizza?

Hi All,

Does anybody here play poker? If so, what games do you play?

I'm interested in building a commercial gambling game but I need some inspiration.

What do you find most thrilling about poker? If you could change something about it, what would you change? Sometimes I don't like how only one person wins the pot (unless there's a tie). I'm thinking about a game where more than one person wins the pot.

Anyone have any other ideas that would change poker to a 'better' game?

Thanks,

Rob

I playtested a board game that used poker as the combat mechanic. Your "troops" are represented by coins. When you went to battle, you bet just like normal poker. This gave you the overall goal "Earn more money where I need the support" instead of just "Win as much money as you can". It was interesting. I think there was even a hand played to produce resources as well.

I took a game design class at the local college, and this was a game made by one of the other students. We playtested it only once but everybody liked it. His whole theme involved a map of islands and the coins represented natives. Unfortunately, I think he ended up dropping the class. Since the project was actually to design a prototype for a video game, I doubt he developed it further beyond that.
