i'm not just a board gamer... i'm a gamer gamer... video included and i'm wondering what's going to come out of this year's E3 convention...

i've got to say though i'm not as excited as i was a couple of years ago... i mean.. how many friggin' years in a row am i supposed to be excited about doom 3 without actually seeing the game? and for that matter, what about fable / ego / what the hell ever they're calling it now? i was stoked about this game two years ago ... now i'm just like, "is it in my console? no... talk to me when it's in the machine..."

anyway...

i don't know.. i love video games but i'm just looking for an essential paradigm shift at this point. i'm only 30 but what with moore's law and all i'm wanting the Next Big Thing already....

guess i'll just go play morrowind, culdcept and harvest moon until something else good comes out...

till then.. uh..yeah.. till then...

E 3 ... anyone other than me excited about it?

PS:

and what is up with the nintendo DS?

they kept saying "it's not another game boy" and what with all the extra hoo-haw they are apparently puttin in there i guess it's not...

but really after what i've seen it's either just another PDA or... well... just another game boy with some hoo-haws as well as a few bells and/or whistles...

whatever...

i just paid a hundred bucks a year ago for a machine that doesn't even have a @@&$&#* headphone port... you're not roping me in that easily ...

your whole "connectivity" thingy is all great assuming i want to play those games but i DON'T i'd rather play the other games online on other consoles that support it.

man i'm not even going to go into this as it's so obvious and overstated...

...

:x

I just got Culdcept as a gift. I really don' play many videogames anymore, but Culdcept is allright. Drop me a PM if you'd like to chat about it (strategy/deckbuilding, etc)

Well it really is not another game boy from their business standpoint. The game boy from it's conception has always been first and foremost a no frills afire that’s sole purpose was to allow players to play video games any where they pleased for not much money so that parents could buy one for there children. Nintendo could have gone with a color screen for the first game boy but that would have made it cost more than the NES and eat batteries.

The DS however has bells and whistles and will likely cost the same or more than the game cube, it's target market is the 20-30 something’s who have the cash to spend on it. While the game boy advanced are 50 dollars cheaper than the game cube and is used for connectivity with the game cube (something that Nintendo thinks is really important). So the DS will theoretically be a third core system for Nintendo.

Have you seen the videos of people playing metroide prime on the DS using the touch screen to control? it looks cool. On the whole I look forward to seeing what Games Nintendo can cook up with the two screens, touch screen, and online abilities. I however have my doubts as to 3ed party support for the platform though.

... I used to be excited about E3, as much as one can without actually being there. This year it kinda snuck up on me, but I did get a chance to play a little Guild Wars, a new MMORPG in alpha from a Blizzard splinter group that had an E3 event.

'Twas alright, and gutsy of them to open up their alpha-state game to not only show floor members but the entire world. Certainly it was a good build for alpha, though the Diablo-like gameplay and M:TG-like magic system (an extended RPS mechanic where low level characters still have a chance to kill higher level characters with good spellbook choices) didn't completely win me over. Still, it's going to be a mostly free MMORPG even in release (players pay quarterly for story-line content, completely optional) and such innovation in a rather stagnated genre is refreshing.

Other than that, I'm not even that excited about the Nintendo DX or any of the other myriad big announcements and show installations that were planned.
