I'm off to cottage country for a few days... which means

a) lots of playtesters trapped in a building for me to corner

and

b) you won't hear from my charming self for a few days. DON'T WORRY. I'm fine.... see you in a bit and have fun, all you Canadians... I'm sure many of you are heading off to cottages yourselves... Americans and other worldwide friends, Uruguayans and wandering Kiwis included - I'm not sure if you have a holiday right now, but tip one back/spark one up anyway! It's always a holiday somewhere!

Cheers!

Well, actually we Uruguayans also have a holiday next monday. The real holiday was May 18th, but they move it to the closest monday to produce a three day weekend; otherwise, some people might feel tempted to skip a day of work and have an even longer weekend. ;-)

Have a nice playtesting weekend!

So as I can see, we all get an holiday around the same week, it's just the name that changes. Here in quebec, we call it the "Patriots day" which was previously called the "Dollard day" ( not "dollars"$ ).

I wonder if there is really an historical value for those days, It seems weird that all historical events would all happen in the same week.

In my case, there is. On may 18, 1811, José Artigas (our national hero, the Uruguayan equivalent to George Washington) led the small and barely armed rebel army to the first major victory over the Spanish army. This was a battle with a tremendous historical value to us. At the end of the battle Artigas issued an order that surprised the defeated army and stays, to this day, as one of the most remarcable examples of his unique personality: "heal the wounded, free the prisioners". No enemies were kept captive, much less executed, as was the norm in those days. He even refused to take the defeated Spanish Captain Posadas' saber, since he cosidered that humilliating.

Wargamers would find this battle very interesting: the Spaniards had a trained army of 1.200 men, 6 cannons and 2 mortars capable of launching explosive granades, and were armed with the best rifles available at the time. They were waiting for the rebel army in a high place (in a grassland enviroment, no mountains here). Artigas' army was composed by 400 soldiers on foot and 600 with horses. Only a few had military training, most of them were just gauchos (cowboys), who were expert horsemen and skillful in the use of bolas and pikes with cattle. Artigas sent part of his men to fake an attack, advancing just to shooting distance. As soon as the Spaniards opened fire, the rebels begun a retreat. As the Spanish army begun to chase them, leaving their advantadgeous position, Artigas' cavalry, hidden behind a nearby hill, launched a side attack that left them surrounded by the rebels. The battle lasted for about five more hours, until Posadas rised the white flag in surrender. A clever strategy let Artigas win the battle against a stronger and better positioned rival. :-)

Great story. I'm a sucker for tales of colonies defeating their "master" countries. Though I'd guess that if I was, say, British instead of American then I might have a different default response.

PS: In the US our Memorial Day (originally Decoration Day) was started after our civil war, in 1868. The date doesn't seem to have to do with anything in particular. By 1890 it was recognized by all Northern states, and by all states after World War I, when it became a day to honor all our dead soldiers, not just those who died in the Civil War.

There's a movement afoot to release the day from its Monday slot and return it to its orginal May 30, in an effort to make it more focused and visible, but (a) there's no way in heck the average American wants to give up his three-day weekend for not much of a principal, and (b) the holiday would only become more obscure, as fewer and fewer businesses acknowledged it. But, y'know, that's just my opinioo, and certainly more than you wanted to know about the topic.
