Here is a very interesting web article that one of my friend told me to see.
It explains the marketting strategy behind the Nintendo's new Wireless 3D movement controller. It also gives a few reason why the industry is facing a crisis.

Interesting article!

I also found this older article of his -

http://lostgarden.com/2005/09/game-design-review-advance-wars-dual.html

Which is a game design review of Advance Wars:Dual Strike which is a turn based strategy wargame. Though not a boardgame, the playstyle is similar to a boardgame, and thus the review has some interesting elements to it which can relate to a boardgame as well.

Worth checking out.

Thanks for the link. I think Nintendo is on the right track.

By the way, Advance Wars (I just played the first one) is fricking incredible! Yes, it plays like a boardgame, a simplified wargame I'd say. You can even play it multiplayer, by passing the game boy back and forth.

Thanks for the article. It will be really useful since I am currently designing a board game that looks close to Advance Wars. So the content of this article will be useful.

Since we are reading articles, why not read also this article :

This is an article that explains why turn based strategy games have dissappeared from the video game market. The article is split in many pages. So hit the right arrow button at the bottom to continue reading.

I am curently in development of a turn base computer game with a couple of friends (it is not supposed to be a AAA title - but we do hope ;D).

The game has two level of play. The first is the turn based strategy, where you move your pieces around on the board like in chess (the board is much biger though). If two opposing pieces occupy the same square then they enter a realtime fight.

The realtime fight is, either overhead view (like diablo) or as a first person perspective (we haven't yet decided but we are leaning towards the FPS). The victor of this battle eliminates the opposing piece (but can still be injured for future battles).

I have designed a complex (but not too comlicated) troop framework using several (4 actually) interlocking scissor/paper/rock relationships (one has 5 components in it). Which covers troop types as well as actions and attack types of the troops. Balancing it has been very time consumeing, but fun.

I don't think the age of turn based games are over (I regularly play them), just in a down turn (hopefully only temporary). There are a few indi games that use turn based play so the genra is not compleatly dead.

If you haven't already done so, grab a Commodore 64 emulator and snag the games Archon 1 and Archon 2. These were some of the earliest computer games to use this system, and they play very well -- even 25 years later.

Good luck with your title!

As this game is just a casual thing, and we are just doing occasional development on weekends (once or twice a month) we don't expect it to be out soon, but if you want I can keep you posted on the development.

I might start a journal entry even though it's not strictly on topic, but as the turn based gameplay could very easily be run as a boardgame with die rolls or such to determine the winner of the combats, I hope it will be allowed (mods: let me know if you don't want to allow it as I knoew it is OT for this site).
