I have come up with an idea for a game and looked on boardgamegeek to see if it had ever been done. I found a game with the same theme, but somewhat different mechanics. It looks like the game was published 16 years ago by a company that has two games published. The company doesn't appear to have a website and I've never heard of them. Should I proceed with my idea?

There are plenty of games out there with the same theme. In fact there are a lot of games out there with the same mechanics. As long as your game adds something to the theme that makes it unique, I would say you should pursue it. Which game are you refering to?
