How long is a long time to wait?

This is a question for either game publishers or designers that have had the pleasure of corresponding with them.

I have sent in a simple query e-mail asking a medium sized specialty game company weather they are accepting submissions. How long should I expect this business to take in replying?

It has been a week, in my work e-mails from public inquires are usually replied to within one business day of receiving them, this seems long to me for such a simple question.

From my experience, the companies that replied replied very quickly, generally within 24 hours. In fact, I cannot think of a company that replied outside of, say, a couple of days, but I have by no means contacted all of the companies out there (probably not even a decent fraction of them!). If you've waited that long, I'd bet money that you're not going to hear from them at all, but take my experience with a healthy grain of salt.

Keep in mind that in this day and age, it's entirely possibly that you're sending an e-mail to an account that flat out just doesn't get checked all that often, if at all. If the person in the position has changed, the replacement person might not know to check the e-mail. You might want to call the company or e-mail the general info mailbox asking who would be the correct person to forward the request to.

Just my $.02. Good luck with your game!

This varies incredibly - some publishers (Hans im Glueck and Alea, for example) I get responses back in a day. Some (which I won't call out) have taken a month or more.

There's also a chance the email didn't make it through at all.

Occassionally, I'm corresponding with a company by email and then I don't get a response. After a few days I send a polite "why didn't you respond" email, and I usually get a response that they never saw my previous but sometimes they say they did respond though I never got it.

I also occassionally receive emails (usually related to ebay) asking why I didn't reply to their email -- an email I never got.

I think the reliability of email has dropped quite a bit over the past few years, probably because of over-aggressive spam-filters. I've also seen webstores basically explaining that and asking people to resend an email if they don't get a reply in a reasonable amount of time.
