Do simple games go far?

My cousin invented (as far as I know) this dice game like Sequence but with dice (the dice represent coordinates on a graph, and players put pegs in whatever they roll, so if I roll 2 on the black die and 4 on the white, I put a peg in the hole located at 2,4). The object is to get three in a row, and you can remove other player's pegs by rolling the same thing they previously rolled.

Anyway what I want to know is do simple games like the example above go a long way or does a game need to be more complex?

My general advice is: keep it simple. The whole trick of designing games is to make a simple, coherent ruleset that allows for interesting situations and decisions.

The game you describe surely is simple enough. However, it doesn't allow the players to make interesting decisions. In fact, the players don't make any decisions at all, it's purely a game of chance. Such games might appeal to children and/or people who only very occasionly play a game. Games like "LCR" and the "Game of Goose" are examples of games that get played by that gorup of people.

So, there is a market for such games, but I have the feeling that it is pretty saturated and that it will be hard to sell such a game.

Inbterestingly enough, LCR is consistently in the top 10 games sold at a local game shop. I personally have no interest in it, but enough others do to make it very popular!

I agree with Zaiga that your cousin's game sounds as though it has very little to offer in the way of decision making (very low AP?), is there a way to offer more decisions to the player? It would make the game more complex, but is it too simple as is?

Something to think about...

Your Cousins game could be played by 2 computers and the game would be the exact same as if played by 2 people.

As for keeping rules simple. Some people like it, some people dont. There are alot of big wargames with lots of rules that rea very popular. Do a little research on a game called Advanced Squad Leader.

Thanks for the input. My cousin wasn't planning on selling the game or anything (after all she's only like 10 years old) but I just wanted to see what you guys thought about simplistic games.

However I think I have a small little tweak to the game that could make it that much more interesting. As opposed to being forced to put the peg in the coordinate (Black Die, White Die), maybe the player could choose which die was which coordinate? (I answered my own question)

Good idea. Or even be able to roll 3, or 4 dice and choose any 2 combination.

I still dont want to steal her idea and sell it though so I'll come up with something on my own =)
