Epic, advanced style strategy game

Hello everyone,

I am a real hardcore strategy gamer and I dont mean Axis & Allies (although it was good), I really enjoy playing epic games which involve all the other aspects that are cut out of other strategy board games. I love selecting a nation and delving into it, changing and morphing what you wish and achieve something (not nessessarily world domination as is prominant in other strategy games).

Now that I have stated that, I should state what I wish to do. I am currently devising a board game called "Atomic Empire". It has a Cold War version, beginning in 1960 and a Modern Age version, beginning in 1990 during the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. So far I have written 3 pages of economic info. I know that sounds insane but it is really quite easy to understand and is very effective at portraying the real world. I devised a system where there is a dedicated player who controls the corporate world. The corporation controls various resource gathering operations, factories and civil service buildings across the world (the world is divided into provinces) whereas the government controls other items of the same type, each can buy and sell to each other.

I have developed resources, provincial infrastructure rules, manufacturing rules and transport rules so far. I am jotting down more and more ideas and I really want to make this game work and I am really enthused for it. I know I havent really described much, just given insight on it but you can be convinced this is working. The only problem I have is how to cut down and group nations properly, I need figurehead nations such as the USA, China and Russia but I also want to include chief European, Middle Eastern, African and South American nations, possible two to three nations for each continent. I know many will gasp at this but I am aiming for this game to be epic, 12 + players but also to have a cut down version where you control nations in an alliance at the same time. As both versions of the game have Warsaw Pact and the Soviet Union, grouped alliances are possible. Another aspect that challenges me is a possible real time version of the boardgame, meaning ultimate playability, almost like a computer game.

I know this is ambitious and I would love feedback. I would also greatly appreciate any links to rulebooks from other epic strategy games so I can get my bearings on what my target market could be and how advanced some games are out there.

Cheers,

Tim

Tim,

Sounds like quite an undertaking! But, your enthusiasm to pull the project off is clear, and I'm sure you will make it happen. Good luck!

I think that with a game that takes 12+ players, a detailed simulation, and many hours to play (I assume), there's a very good chance you're making this game just for yourself. And, I hasten to point out, that's not a bad thing at all. Unconstrained by the realities of making the game sellable, you can pursue your grand vision and mold the game into exactly what you want it to be. At this point, that's really the direction I'd head in, were I you. Not every game project needs to have the mass market in mind, and in your case, I think you're in for a LOT of compromises if you hope to sell the game to a publisher.

I know that you're going for reality here, but I'd be careful about worrying too much about the specific nations you need to have represented in the game just yet. At this point, you really need to focus on a uniform set of mechanics that all nations will use. Worrying too much about who should be in the game could get you sidetracked, and encourage you to come up with a bunch of small side-mechanics (like, "the Middle Eastern nations need to have a 'terrorism' mechanic; the Germany player needs to have a 'Berlin wall' mechanic", etc). Focus on the big, unifying concepts in the game, and then start divvying up nations in a way that is most balanced from a playability standpoint.

I think (but don't quote me on this) that GMT games is probably the only company that's still making heavy-duty wargames these days, so you might look at their line of games and see what kinds of things they're up to.

Good luck!

jwarrend,

Your spot on :P I am more or less designing this game for myself and my network of friends who love grand strategy. It feels like you have read my mind in describing how I can mould it exactly the way I wanted it to be :-D

I know that any attempt to market this game would probably fail...its not exactly mind boggling complex, its just very large and requires a lot of thinking and movement on the board (I'll explain it in much more depth soon). I'll heed your advice about not worrying too much about nations just yet while I develop my mechanics but its still at the back of my mind... I want to include a broad spectrum but I'll need to design a mechanic that will run nations that are not controlled by a player...hmmmm...

Anyway, this was just a quick message and I'll be back on later...hope to post some info soon. Thanks for the tips jwarrend!

Cheers,

Tim

Have you come across "Europa Universalis" which is now better known as a computer game precisely because the original was such an ambitious undertaking.
It's clearly a much earlier period than your game but it does an astounding job of letting a player get involved with the minutiae of running a country or an empire.
