Game: ¡Mi gato se arde! (My cat is on fire!)

Hey folks,

I'd thought I'd bring my first game design to the table (cough) and see what you all think.

The working title is "¡Mi gato se arde!" (My cat is on fire!).

It's a board game for up to 4 players and I'm still in the early stages of developement and testing out mechanics.

Basic premise: A cat is loose in the neighborhood and you're one of four characters trying to catch it. Owner, Little Timmy, Animal Control and Bruce - the genetically engineered dog/DOD project gone wrong.

The game board is a series of 25 interconnected squares through which you and the cat can move. The cat's movements are driven by both a series of random events (cards drawn at the end of each turn) and cat-physics, which state that a startled cat will travel in a straight line as rapidly as possible until stopped or forced to turn.

Directions you and the cat can move are North, South, East and yes, West. If the cat hits a 'wall' (the end of the board) it continues it's movements in a randomly determined direction.

Every turn the players can move 1 square, and also play cards which can influence the cat's movements, their own movements and the movements of other players.

At the end of every turn an event card is drawn which can cause the cat to move, stay put, lose a life or some combination of those events. The cat has 9 lives. If all 9 lives are lost, the game is over with no winner.

Players start the game with a hand of 5 cards, and draw a card at the beginning of their turn. Their cards can increase their movement, alter the movement of the cat, hinder other players and of course, put a burning cat out.

The object is to be the only player on the same square as the cat (and the cat can be just passing by) and have the ability to capture it. You cannot capture a burning cat.

So those are the basics. I'm still working on a rough out playing board and cards.

I know this is still pretty early in this game's life but I'd welcome comments and questions.

The idea sounds fine, but the name does not. You don't say "Mi gato se arde" but "Mi gato se incendia". The right use of the verb "arder" would be "mi gato arde" or rather "arde mi gato", but the natural thing to say is "se incendia". But that means litterally on fire, as with flames and smoke.

Now if by "is on fire" you mean "out of control", then even "se incendia" makes no sense at all. The name should be "Mi gato se desbocó" (desbocado means running like crazy) "mi gato se enloqueció" (went crazy) or maybe "mi gato está como loco", "mi gato está enloquecido", or something like that.

This is advice from a native spanish speaker. :-)

name / distribution

Heh- I'll take your advice and run with it. :) Actually, I'm not going to stick with this name I think... it's more of an inside joke between several friends.

I'm still tossing around ideas for the final name for it. I'm also tossing around ideas for distribution.

Right now I'm leaning towards making everything into a few PDFs and just releasing it on the web. Any thoughts on that? I'm not really looking to get rich (or even make much money at all) off of this particular game, but if the game is fun and is playable, I'd like to get my name out there.

Cheers,
Ben

I have no experience in publishing games. I'm actually a graphic designer who loves games and started to design games just a few months ago. So I'm affraid I can only help you with the spanish translation. ;-)

But self publishing (both in print and as PDF) is a recurrent topic here at the forum, so I'm sure you'll find lots of info on that. If you have any specific question regarding selling a game as a PDF through the web, just ask for help and someone with experience will probably answer.

Good luck with your game! :-)

hi !

I like the sound of your game !

For the movement, please check Finstere Flure (on BGG).
Every move (in your game, every card played) can effect the monster (the cat) movement, so there's more strategy with every movement / card played.

I imagine a town map (just like Zombies !!! tiles, but with a brighter color, cartoon feel), and the cat token runs here and there and four player tokens surround the cat. Cool ! Input : make the town map as tiles, so each play is different.

Another input : in a 2 player game, each player plays 2 tokens, while in 3/4 players game, each player plays 1 token. What about each character has a special ability ?

Hey Jack,

I've been considering several of your ideas already. My first step though is to get the basic game mechanics worked out - turns, movement, victory conditions. Once these things are set and satisfactory to me, I'll work on color and extra fun stuff.

Cheers!

I might add that this has been a fairly time consuming process (mostly because of my 2 year old daughter not leaving me tons of dev time :).

Fortunately I've got a great group of willing playtesters that run from experienced gamers to raw newbies.
