Ideas on doing a game duel for multiplayer mobile game

Hi y'all,

I hope this is the right place to post this. If not, then my 1000's apologies.

I need an idea on this. I want to dev a multiplayer text-based mobile game, playable via SMS (called text messaging in the US).

So, I need a concept on how players can "fight" each other. The objectives are,

-The game duel shall appeal to both genders - male and females
-There's a minimal chance of a draw in the duel. If possible, there's no draw result in a duel.
-Preferably players win NOT by chance, but by skills or knowledge of the game.

A classic example would be "hand-scissors" duel, but the problem is that chances of draw are pretty high!
Another example would be the battleship idea, players their ships and shoot at a grid hopefully to strike the other players ships. But, by using grid, we're dependent on graphics, which are not appealing to a text-based game.

My best idea is to make like a "striker and goalie" game, one player shoots at a desired spot, goalie saves at a desired spot. If the spots are the same, the goalie wins, else the striker wins! So, no draw in this.

So, I'm really open for any ideas at all. All ideas are highly appreciated and you maybe chosen to be the BETA-tester.

Hello melwong!

1000's apologies accepted. :) This site is about the design of board games such as Chess, Risk, Monopoly, Settlers of Catan, etc...

Board games are often turn-based and almost always multiplayer; Some nice board games could be designed on a mobile phone platform.

It seems to me that melwong's question is valid. First off, why not allow a board game in text message format? But even if that doesn't qualify as a board game, the mechanic is still valid and usable in a board game. His exaple of Battleship is a good one. There is hidden information and you communicate with your opponent as to where you attack.

Similarly in Bridge you communicate the contents of your hand (or hints thereto) via an out loud bid.

So what mechanic can we help this guy with that would allow fror fighting via some verbal communication? I think the goalie example is a pretty bad idea, as the goalie would lose most of the time. Unless there's only 2 'zones' to cover (say, left and right). But it doesn't really qualify anyway because there's no 'knowing the game', it's all luck.

Well, we'd have to know quite a bit more about what sort of game this is. Is there a referee of some kind, some objective person who can hold information apart from the players? If not, do the players themselves hold information, seperate and secret from the other players? Can they excahnge this information? Does a physical exchange happen as well, such as cards or tokens trading hands (even "virtual" cards or tikens) that contain informaiton in an objective way?

Structure detirmines the possible, when it comes to strategy. Without a structure of some kind, the best we'll be able to come up with are luck-based systems. Anything that allows skill to play a role would require us to create a structure first, which would be a big part of designing the game you need help with.

Throw us a bone to gnaw on, over here!

Good call, Hedge-o-Matic.

I definitely need strategy. It's just that i can't think of one right now. Most of my ideas are based on luck. Odds and Evens are based on luck to i guess.

Well, battleships are more strategic, but it takes too much steps to finish a game. Maybe i'll consider shriking the grid to hasten the gameplay.
