My method of releasing my CCG:

After getting some printing quotes, and being turned down by publishers who seem to have little-to-no interest in CCGs - I came up with an entirely new model for the game:

The OCCG:
Open Customizable Card Game -

I'm releasing the game for free, both for the players to print on to their own cards (either coverstock or Newt's card sheets) and having free online play.

What is "open" about this system, is while we release some sets and manage the rules/site for the game, the essence of the game is left to the community - they are allowed, and encouraged to make game expansions.

Now, obviously we do have to moderate the expansion sets, but the above gives you an idea on how we're releasing the card game.

Any thoughts?

This seems to be a really cool idea!

Are you keeping stats on your site as to downloads and comments? I'm very interested to hear what kind of response you get.

I've seen open gaming forums for D20 type stuff, and I'm a big user of open software, so kudos to you in this release method.

Cheers!

No particular stats at the moment. The general hits counter on the backend, but nothing particular right now.

We will have a forum running (do already actually), which will be a pretty good indicator on what response we get.

I really do like the OpenCCG system - keeping things community driven, leaving the game to what the players want, and only leaving us to moderate it.

Should be an interesting ride. :)

edit: for reference, since we opened up the site yesterday afternoon, we've pulled 3,750 unique hits thus far.

Walked,

Have you tried the protoparts cards? Are they fully compatible with Newt's? If not it might be nice to include formats for both as protoparts cards are less expensive than Newts.... If you want me to mail you a few sample sheets I'd be happy to.

BTW, Protoparts is at protoparts.bgdf.com . And I love the idea of this game... I think it's a great model..

Sounds like an innovative way to build a player base for a ccg. I think the online play has a better chance of working than the print you own card path. The reason I say that is your deck requires a min of 50 cards and the art is high density which will require a great deal of color ink, an expensive proposition for anyone who wants a physical deck. It is still a worthwhile option to have for the few that will be interested in making the cards.

Good luck with your project.

No, I have not suggested protoparts as a friend of mine placed an order for me about two weeks ago, and is still yet to recieve his paypal invoice.

If the shopping cart system was moderately better, yes, I would actually reccommend protoparts instead of Newt's based on price alone.

Thanks.

And yes, that is why we decided to contract out an online program for the game - I couldnt see a print-it-yourself only being successful at all.

This game is about accessibility and community. The game is accessible in every way we can manage, and community driven. Anyone willing to give it a shot can play with little-to-no investment.

Ok. Has your friend tried to contact him directly? Sometimes e-mail servers will block e-mail from bgdf.com for whatever reason... Also, just curious, what's wrong with the shopping cart system? The reason I ask is because I was the one who set it up, and if it's preventing people from using it, something needs to be done to fix it.

I believe he has been emailed directly a few times at this point.

The shopping cart isnt exactly bad, though it is a bit ineffecient. Evidence to this #1 is the lack of invoice my friend has. The other part I dislike is having to set up an account, place an order, and THEN wait for an invoice. It seems mildly convoluted to me.

If payment was a one time shop-then-pay deal, I would probably use protoparts straight up rather than Newts. If you would like to discuss it futher, I'd be more than glad to put forth my thoughts, comments, and ideas. PM me, email (Setash@gmail.com), or AIM me (WalkedYarplane).

:)

edit: ALSO, would anyone have any suggestions on where I might be able to advertise? The gam ehas already cost me around $500. and I jsut reserved a Wash. DC ComicCon booth, so my budget is starting to run thin for now. Any other ideas?

I am interested that you have chosen to go it alone, rather than using one of the existing online CCG forums (such as http://www.ccgworkshop.com/)

What was your reason for this? (Apart from enabling a "printable" version of your game, which I imagine you could have done anyway.)

I would have thought that an existing system (like the Gatling Engine) would be a lot more accessible as a development network exists already.

Simply put, I've been less than impressed with some of the offerings out there. My coder for Terality online is very talented, and thus far, his offering is much more elegant than anything else I have seen.

Our engine is account driven, using us as our own central server. We manage the card lists (thus keeping unbalanced card sets away from online play), and have complete rights to our own program.

We are confident we can top other free online card game engines in terms of quality without any problem. CCGworkshop is nice, but not what we want.

Some expressed an interest in how well things are going with this:

Right now, we've broken 10,000 hits within two days - using some mild advertising.

Starting to see some forum activity, but I dont expect to see a whole lot until we fully release the game.

Great response to the OpenCCG model thus far though.
