My untitled game idea.....need first impressions

Okay last weekend I came up with an idea for a card game/board game which I told a few friends who thought it was interesting and just wanted to get your impressions of here also.

The concept of the game is a Monopoly style City Tycoon game where you play locations and buildings to the table which make up the city.

The purpose of this is you choose a faction to start the game with and as the city grows you are trying to take control of the locations and increase your city influence by playing various characters at these locations and event cards against your opponent.

The factions in the game would include greedy corporation types, gangland families, street gangs etc which would all bring in a different style of strategy to the game. The game would have a tongue-in-cheek style and wouldn't take itself seriously however playing with more than two people would mean you can deal, trade, negotiate with opponents to drive one another out of the city for good.

Sorry I am not very good at the brief summary of explanations however I am hoping to get some initial responses from what people think and if you are wanting a more elaborate explanation of mechanics etc just say so.

First welcome Rockay to the site! I am glad you decided to post a topic and be part of the community!

As for your idea, it sounds interesting to me. Not sure if there is something already like this out, but hopefully someone else will chime in on that.

How do you see the actual mechanics for laying out of the locations/buildings? Will it require the players to have some type of resources or *mana* to play the cards?

How will the players bring parts of their factions into play?

What do you see as being tradable during gameplay? Money? Reputation points? Locations?

How would *driving another player out of the city for good* work in the game?

Thanks for the warm welcome :)

Honestly, I do not know if this idea has been done before. Granted I did get the concept from the old Sim City CCG however I thought it would be more interesting as a 'Sim CCG' kind of thing.

There would be no mana but cost from influence. The more you control, the more influence your family/faction/company will gain which gives you more money to spend on better locations, characters and events.

The method I had for characters is that you choose an Employer character. This is the character that you control and will give abilities to your team during the game. For example, Mafia Godfather would be an employer meaning you are controlling a mafia family. (Just an example)

Locations will not have a specific faction however if you have a character at a location and your opponent dosent you control this shop/business and can use its abilities however if it is a free location it would be a vacant store.

Driving players out of the city would be the premise for winning the game. Your family controls all the cities shady underground with no room for any competition.

Your idea sounds very similar to my STRIFE project, except my theme is more medieval/renaissance with light fantasy elements.

So...best of luck. I'm keeping STRIFE on the backburner until I can get my CCG finished, but it will be interesting to see where our ideas align and diverge.

I'm also currently working on a game which revolves around building up a city with buildings, characters, factions and so on. There is also going to be various narrative driven elements in the game.

I have not decided upon the setting yet, but it will likely be some combo of modern/speculative/fantasy such as you might find in fiction but authours like China Mieville and Jeff Vandermeer (if you haven't tried these books and are designing a city game, they are well worth reading - you're sure to get ideas for characters, names and locales regardless of the actual details of your setting).

Discord, I looked at your strife project which looks really interesting - are you planning to be able to carry over game state from one session to another, and allow for campaign type games where the gameworld is enriched from session to session? If so, then what is your mechanism for this?

My game is based on an actual city layout with streets and major locales at the intersections, but with key buildings and characters being placed at different locales from session to session. Movement will be point to point along streets. Rockay - your game seems to have a more abstract feel to it - a monopoly style track running round the outside or something?

Essentially, each game takes place in a different village, town or city, so the slate is wiped clean with each game, with the players(2 to 8/9) struggling for control. Though there are nine factions available, a two player game might both involve the same faction....two rival gangs, two opposing religions, two different noble families, etc.

That being said, I _am_ considering including "parallel games". So two city games could be played side by side, with a few events having global effect. For example, a Declaration of War...in a single city game, this would allow the building of an army camp, would give the City Watch more powers, etc. In a multi-city game you could declare war on a specific rival city, and gain wealth/influence through leading a successful campaign. Another easy option would be to have Exiled units from other cities available for hire.

My layout is a square grid with clipped corners. The outside squares represent specific terrain types outside the village/city. All the inner squares are potential building "sites".

Well it is good to see there are a similar themed games being created but at the same time they do sound very different. My game for example will be set today, no fantasy or those kind of elements and there wont be any streets. Pretty much the buildings will just sit adjacent to one another.

The game itself will revolve more around the characters and events you play and locations are primarily for bonuses and movement.

Yes I am trying to go for a more comic feel to the game and the way I invision this is that the artwork would reflect that and once the buildings are layed on the table it would be more of a monopoly style (at this stage anyway)
