seems very complicated with lots of stuff.

how different is it from Jack's game?

is it an improvement or just your attempt at making
a similar game or what?

I like the Baghdad setting, not the typical fantasy middle ages,
having said that, wasup with the monsters,
I wish they were more set with that setting.
You use monsters from the fantasy middle ages.....
I want to see all kinds of genies, some on magical carpets,
you can make your own class of genies.

anyway then you travel to Beijing?
you can rape women?

man this is a crazy game.
very ambitious large project your dealing with,
if you pull it off, its gonna be a monster.
good luck.

"anyway then you travel to Beijing?

man this is a crazy game. "

I laughed till my a** off ! :D Man, that's funny :D

Well, I'm happy that my (first) game play the Pay It Forward role. My game was inspired by the Barbarian Prince game, and I'm happy that my game inpires another game (including Dete's) !

I've thought about making the expansion set for IOD but I have changed my mind and move to IOD2 (it will be much different than IOD, the game will be ready in a few days). And after IOD2 I still don't decide what to do first, I have some options to do,

As I see that Rhianor has a good idea !
As a suggestion, you can :
- make a new game (just remember to playtest a lot, since it's a solo game, time is all you need :), or
- you can make a part of your idea as an 'official' expansion to IOD (you can add something here and there, eg the Luck and Fame stats, but still use the same 'engine'). I have created a Yahoo Groups for IOD, you can post your expansion there (and I will put a link from the IOD site), and we can discuss it in that group, I can share my experience when designing IOD. (maybe expansion 1 is set in Beijing, the rape idea is intriguing :D

Anyway, feel free to choose ! And happy designing !

Sorry but why the Hell is the thought of Raping women funny?

I thought it was a typo or wrong wording until I re-read the rules overview.

I for one strongly object to any time of 'Game' that would promote, condone or incorporate any aspect of rape.

I agree with Nestalawe. The thought of rape as a choice for a player is just awful. Not a funny thing at ALL. Makes me sick, actually.

It makes me think though, many of us here are constantly encouraging players to rob, cheat, do horrible violence, kill, murder, and cannibalize NPCs and each other. Not a single eye gets blinked at any of that. So, where is the line? Why am I offended at rape in a game then? I AM offended, or at least very bothered....

Is it because of the mix of sex & violence? Sex doesn't bother me at all. In fact, I like it a lot. Violence I am a big fan of. (FAKE violence, mind you. Real violence with real pain and real consequences is disgusting to me. A strange effect but it's true.. I can watch a thousand kung-fu movies and love every second of it, but show me real footage of someone actually getting beaten up and my stomach turns....) Not that I equate rape with sex though... rape is cruelty and control, not sex.

Is it because the victim is a woman? Most of the time in the violent aspects of our games, it is male characters, monsters, or sexless "troops" that are doing terrible things to each other. Does this reveal a pre-feminist slant to my morals? That can't be it.. not quite... there are many instances of female characters in games that get violence done to them... valkyries, sorceresses, witches, she-beasts of all kinds... Women have the obvious right to be portrayed as the soldiers and leaders in all of these violent games, and it happens often, so that's not the sticky point here...

Is it because the victim is helpless? Maybe that's the key. I think that I would react in a similar way to Torture being included similarly in a game.... violence in most of our games has some element of justification to it... it's us versus them, or the monsters are evil, or the opponent is competent and warlike themselves. In this case of rape, the victim is not a willing agressor, the deed is a horrible act of cruelty, and the choice is being offered to the player nonchalantly....

I'm not sure what to say. I hope I'm misenterpreting comments in this thread, and that people don't find the idea of rape to be funny. The concept saddens me.

Yeah, but there are always boundaries.

There was an uproar about Slavery being part of Struggle Of Empires -

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/9625

But this was justified in that it is a major aspect of the world as it was during the setting of the game. It is not glorified or abused, but is incorporated as an integral part of the game world.

As designers, we must in a way be self-regulating and self-censoring. Sure I am making a game that incorporates cannibalism, but it is within a fantastical tongue-in-cheek world environment in which native cannibals play a strong part. If you want to look deeper into it there are also 'other' meanings behind why a group of pirates would need to cannibalise one of their own to survive an attack by another group of cannibals ;)

At the same time, I can understand if people take offense to cannibalism ;)

But still, without justification, there is absolutely NO reason why Rape would or should need to be part of a boradgame, unless it was some sort of game used to to help rape victims in some way.

Anything else is unhealthy ignorance.

I knew you'd pick that out, Nestalawe ;)

I wasn't trying to single you out specifically, I was just trying to reconcile my own reaction to the rape option (disgusted) with my reaction to something similarly taboo ... cannibalism is about as outrageous a topic as I could think of on this site, and I think your game idea is pretty damn funny...

So I agree with you completely, I was just trying to examine WHY I do.

No worries OLime, I knew twas but a jibe ;)

But seriously, I wouldn't think of making a serious game about cannibalism, as in trying to emulate that German bloke or making a game where you tried to convince youngsters to come up to your loft so you could 'show them your etchings'. Neither would I design a game based around all those dead baby jokes...

There are a million things that I wouldn't consider putting into a game.

But when designing a strongly themed game you must always consider what the boundaries are. Not only your own but your target audience. Horror themed games could come close - has there ever been a banned boardgame? What sort of Censorship is out there? How do we protect our youngsters?

I doubt there will ever be a need for any sort of regulation in the boardgame market, seeing that it is so small, especially amongst us self-publishers.

But still, goes to show that this forum is a good place to air these ideas and make sure things like this get discussed.

I know and agree that's why I put Appallingly funny.

I try to view the whole thing as hentai anime type of thing.
Like getting killed or getting married in a video game.
it's most unreal. you don't have to deal with consequences,

The reason I think people usually condemn rape more than murder is due to a couple of factors. 1st because there is never a justifiable reason for rape. Murder on the other hand can be justified by war, passion, revenge, justice, etc. The 2nd is probably more animalistic, but murder in the wild say among tribes usually has to do with dominance. In the sense that the more powerful or skillful will muder the other. Either my tribe vs yours, or whatever. Rape is usually an outlet of impotence or inability to gain sexual power through "natural" or conventional means and is taken out on a woman as a show of power. Therefore, a rapist is usually the lowest form in nature. Someone who has to resort to rape because he cannot lure a mate with physical provider means (good looking, athletic, good hunter) or by mental provider means (smart, inventive, skilled) is probably seen as weak by almost all humans. A murderer (non serial or psycho murderer) like a roman gladiator who kills to gain fame, gang member/mafioso who kills to get to the top, samurai who kills for his lord, or african tribesman who killed a rival tribesman is seen as powerful and successful by his peers (and probably subconsciously by most humans) because for good or bad, he is successful at staying alive and living his life. He will probably pass on these powerful and successful (at his life for good or bad) genes to his offspring. No one covets rapist genes because it implies innate weakness, impotence, and failure to survive within our society. I have to say however, that although I presonally would never design, buy, or even play a game with a "Rape Mechanic", it's your choice as a designer to include it for some reason.

Also, it's factually not the mixture of sex and violence. I think the fusion of sex and violence (consensual) is very very hot. I mean this is a family site so I won't take it any further... Just my opinion.

I don't think you mean that you condone rape, though I could be wrong. "Condone" means to overlook, forgive, or disregard. That is, if you condone rape, you don't feel that it should be punishable or, necessarily, even wrong.

So you condemn rape but find it funny and enjoyable when in a game setting?

Again, condemning rape and yet you wish to make a game that (in a selectively warped manner) lets a player perform rape (or be raped)? Maybe you should expand upon your selection of 'Evil' activities. (I was about to list a few ideas for you, but chose to resist and not put ideas into your head...)

And isn't a Democracy aslo meant to Protect people from these types of activities? Isn't the idea of a Democracy meant to provide a safe society and community for all? Why mention Democracy if it does not really exist in your game world?

well this this a game to be played with friends, at night, after drinking some beers, its a game to laugh.
iF you know something of anime, think in golden boy, with voluptous womens trying to seduce you.

and actually you in some events are actually the person being raped.
with friend, its a lot fun.

and this is not a macho game, girls are testing this, and having fun.

Yeah, ok, I get the picture, now I can understand the target audience. Thats fine if you want to create an adolescent pseudo-porn game for you and your friends, but I really hope one day you sit back and realise what you are doing, and what affect it has on your mindset, those around you and those outside your circle that you interact with. Do you actually know what being Raped means? Do you really think it is not degenerating, humiliating and violent? Do you know what happens to Rapists in prison? Do you know any actual Real Women?

But y'know, I Am talking about the Real World here, sorry about that. If your world portrays Rape as a fun, communal event and you wish to impress this upon your gamers, then thats cool, and I apologise for getting the wrong idea.

I'm sorry to rant, I know I shouldn't, its not as if I am a perfect person. But at least I have respect, and think about my words and actions and how they relate to the world outside my own existence.

I think the difference is that between Conflict and butallity. A game is about conflict (there can be non-violent conflict), rape is about violence and brutallity, not conflict.

From a game design point of view if there is an option to rape and it always punished then it is not realy an option (do I take option A and get rewarded or take option B and get punished). If you reward the option to Rape then you ARE condoning it and not condeming it. I can not see a way to include the option of rape with out it being either a non choice (and only included for the perverse gratification that it would give you) or that you DO condone it.

Whoa, a lot of serious talk here...

At first (yesterday), I only read the post a little, and read Dete's comments, and I really feel funny that this game is crazy hehehe... :)
That was what I thought when I only read about this yesterday:
"If the princess still lives, you may:
Rape her, and lose 5 fame
Kill her, and lose 10 fame, and became a "Child Killer".
Save her, and win3 fame, and 2 luck. " (I think that's it, the designer just have a crazy idea)

Then today, I read all the serious post here and re-read the first post completely and I realized that there's more than that. The player can has the title
"Prince of beds-when you rape a women you will win positive fame" (the player will be encouraged to rape (!!), Hmmm I think that is too much for me.
You can change that in a nicer way, example : "Cassanova - when you make love you will win positive fame" (it's nicer. Even Leasure Suit Larry will not rape). And don't forget to add the Disease card (with the flavour text : "you have been warned !!") :D

(I can see what you mean, that when the player has the Prince Of Beds title, when he rape the pincess, he will get 5 Fame points, because the minus becomes plus). Just change that a little, and your game is much better, and will be received by more people.

Or write at the beginning : "WARNING : contains adult material and blablablabla (fill in the blablabla), you have been warned !!". (Even with this, I still suggest pull out the please-rape-to-add-your score title). Or, just leave it that way, but expect more people rejecting your idea, because your idea is in 'grey' area, and this is a public area :)

For the sake of your game, you probably should not include rape. You could say "You saved the princess and in her fragile and innocent state, she is making improper advances, will you maintain your knightly composure and return her to the king in her virgin state, or will you allow your lust to overpower your Knightly errand and taint the royal bloodline." I know it sounds silly but it would be more tame and actually humorous to think of a supposed virgin princess being delivered to the stuffy king all disheveled and giddy while the king praises the knights heroics but he actually slept (consensually) with the princess and deflowered her. This will give him a more "rogue/swashbuckler" personality than a true Chivalrous Knight. Hey the girl has been through a big ordeal and the Knight could have been honorable and not taken advantage of the lady in distress, for this he will be rewarded. But...if he gives in to his (and her) desires, he might gain fame as a less than chivalrous knight. Although taking liberties with a vulnerable but willing woman is still not angelic or knightly behavior, it's not evil by any means and fits the theme much better than "rapist heros". Instead of raping fellow players, have them have a forced test of strength or wits. The attacked cannot refuse the challenge, lest he be labeled a coward so he is forced to compete even if he will lose. The more the offender in either case does this the more rogue he becomes until certain options in the game will become more difficult for him due to his personality/alignment. Also, there's the chance that the princess wasn't so virgin afterall and he contracts some "illness" or "curse". This would be much more tame and reasonably acceptable in my view.

ok instead of rape i gonna put something like this:

"You try to atempt against the princess purity, but fails, lose 5 fame".

its a bit lame, but its no rape, and the player fails.

ok this are the realy alpha rules.
Rules:

how to play:

This is a card game. And to play it, all you need its the cards, a dice, a paper and a pencil.
you may play this game solo or multiplayer.
in a multiplayer game, the players should take one character card randomly, next pick one town.(you could let the players choose if they want all to start in the same town).
next you should choose the player order. The first player must chose what to do, in a typical city, may chose to go to a shop, get so heal, or get a quest from the ruler.
Using the shop-lost one turn.
Using the healer-lost one turn.
Using the ruler-lost one turn.

You can only do a task per turn.
After you complete a task you must pass the turn.

The other player will have the same options.

The game will continue until the winning conditions are met.

Quests:
After buying a quest you may refuse it paying two fame.
Sometimes when players agree, they may do a quest together, splitting the benefits.

Body hunting:
If a player gains the title of "Bandit" the other player can hunt him down. for that he must fight him in the cities, or follow is path cards. the victorious player keeps the enemies gold and items.

Combat:
The character always attacks first.(unless you are told not to).
You roll the dice and adds the result to your attack power in the moment(initial value plus bonus) next you compare the result to the monster defense value.
If your value is bigger you win.

Test luck:
When you are send to test you luck you must roll a d6, and if you luck value its equal or bigger than the result of the roll, you had luck.

Items:
The player has a bag that permits to transport only 3 unequipped items.
He may use only:
a weapon equipped, two rings, and a item.

All special items are unique, the first to get one its the first to keep it.
Normal items are sold to the shop keeper, by the same buy price, or may be traded by players in the same city or dropped in the floor, dropped items are lost.
Special items cannot be sold. They can be traded by players in the same city or dropped in the floor, dropped items are lost.
