I saw this little movie 1 week ago.
You can check it out on youtube here:

And I was wondering if there could be a game made out of it. It can be educational. But it doesn't have to be.
How would you do that?

I for example had in mind that a sphere would be the best object to be the 3D creature. Simply due to the fact that it can be bigger or smaller in flatland. Which gives it the ability to block the flat creatures pathways.

Another aspect would be, recognizing objects from a flat landers point of view. By drawing a card, and watching the line on that card. Perhaps even 2 lines if the flat lander watches it from different angle's.

So Cool!

Also so difficult....

I am watching it ATM but it seems very abstract and difficult, beyond me, but interested :)

It seems that was just the basics.

There is also a sphere land where the beings are still flat, but live in a universe shaped like the surface on a planet.
And many more.
But yeah, too abstract for 98% of the population I guess.

Might make a good computer

Might make a good computer game, since really you'd want to manipulate 3d objects, then project those into 2d, then project those onto a line. It would make a pretty awesome puzzle game I think.

Actually, come to think of it, isn't there a new Zelda game for 3ds that uses this 3d object projected into 2d space idea?

I found Flatland as a free

I found Flatland as a free kindle book a couple of years ago, pretty good read. Might have to watch the video later. The new Zelda, a Link between worlds, is based on the Super Nintendo's Link to the past. It was cool enough for me to snatch my son's 3ds for a few sessions of princess saving.

I'm having a hard time

I'm having a hard time picturing Abbot's work as a game personally.

Indeed a game failure

If it where to be a game. By now I realize, it would be a game for geeks. But it is obvious that the viewing part of the game is no fun at all.

A flatlanders view works like this:

They see a line, but the intensity of the line diminishes with distance. This is their depth. If they watch at a corner, they will see the intensity of the line diminish at two sides. These 2 are compared by their brain. And no matter at what angle they watch, the brain calculates the angle of the corner.
Triangles have 120 degrees
Squares have 90 degrees
Pentagons have 72 degrees
Hexagons have 60 degrees
Octagons have 45 degrees (now at least 2 corners are visible)
etc.
Eventually they can see multiple corners.
By moving around another flatlander, they also can see how fast a side disappears from view.

Now, we can see depth automatically by our brain. But seeing like how flatlander would see is practically impossible. Since our brain doesn't work like that.

In a card game, where you see these lines, and have to guess what it is. Well, you can't, really. But eventually you memorize the cards. Players are not going to do this while flatlanders are forced their entire lives.

Game for geeks for sure ;)

Game for geeks for sure ;) but I could see something coming from the flatland theme, perhaps a game where the object is to create a family tree that would produce the roundest circle. Thematically, flatland might be a treasure chest.
