Normally I have a basic idea of something pop in my head. A theme and some very basic mechanics to match. Or a cool mechanic and put it to a theme.

Well The other day, I had a concept of a board in my head. No mechanics or theme, just a board. I told my self "time to make a themeless abstract" The process is so much different and refreshing. Not trying to match mechanics to theme or theme to mechanics. Just building a completely mechanic driven no luck game.

I will likely go back to the other way after I clean up this design because it is more my way of thinking, this method let my mind open up a bit more and explore pure mechanics with no bias.

That is basically how I

That is basically how I developed my current project. I found it very liberating.

european board games.

I think this pretty much sums up most european board games.

Growing up with that pretty much, I always had a strong interest in games with stronger themes and detailed figurines and/or artwork due to this.

Some can definatly be quite enjoyable though.

No theme ever

I have decided to keep this game as no theme. Some other folks are saying put a theme on it. Nah! No pasted on theme for this one. The name shall be the very base of the main mechanic in old norse. Done.
