Many games using the same components

For the epic game I am creating, I plan for it to be a large scale game. However I have been contemplating creating a number of mini games that can be played with the same components included in the box. So a player could have a long solo game or a long game with friends, or can choose from a number of optional smaller games for multiplayer, by referring to a booklet that contains all the rules. I figured in this way, I may be putting a lot of energy into creating this huge game, but it would come out being a lot in one box. It's like, you buy this game, and get so much more for the investment. Is this something that other games have done?

Then, there are "expansions", and that is a whole other thing.

The game Stonehenge has a common set of components that five different designers all designed games with, all of which are in the rulebook. In addition, other amateur designers have designed 39 additional games for it.

Games using same component set

Look at the piecepack system - public license - a few hundred games designed for it - pretty versatile set of components.

Piecepack

Piecepack is actually an open gaming "standard" with standard components - invented by James Kyle a few years back.

There are four "suits" per set. Each suit has 6 disks numbered 0-5 on one side, with the suit symbol on the other, 6 squares (usually 2") with a crosshatch pattern on one side and the numbers 0-5 on the other, one die numbered 0-5, and one pawn. Thus each set can usually accomodate up to 4 players. To my knowledge there are about 200 games out there for it, with varying levels of playtesting evident.

the Decktet

People often use the term 'game system' to describe a set of components that you can use to play lots of different games. Icehouse and Piecepack are two of the most high profile game systems. There's also the Decktet, which I've mentioned around here before.
