Hello fellow Board Game Designers and Happy New Year!. I´m new here and this is my first post. I wanted to talk about innovation. Like all of you i am very interested in boardgame design, watch reviws, read articles, etc. But the take that mechanic is not disscussed that much.

As many of you i design games in my free time, and im very new to it. So i decided to give it a go to a Take That machanic which seems simple to start with for practice. Though while prototyping and playtesting i feel i fall into a very basic idea.

So the question is, how to innovate and refresh the Take That mechanic. I have been trying to combine different mechanics like Drafting or Hand Managment but nothing seems to really fit.

What would you guys try to make it a fast game but keeping it fresh and fun?. The theme of the game is Sci Fi Fantasy where you conquer planets and have a hero to use abilities with and creatures and items to help conquer.

Let the disscussion begin!

Take That "Game" vs Mechanic

Many games use the "Take That" mechanic as one of several mechanics in the game. It is not often we see a "game" which has as a primary mechanic "Take That". Take for example "Monopoly Deal", it has a "Take That" mechanic when stealing sets of cards from an opponent. When you play a "Take That" card to steal a set, the opponent can ALSO play another "Take That" card to stop the steal...

So IF you want to "focus" on "Take That" cards, my guess is that you will need to think up of cards to "counter" the "Take That" cards or cards you can "combo" with to create even stronger "Take That" plays.

IMHO a game with primary mechanic is "Take That" will require much analysis in determining how to create combos and how to counter them.

Good luck with your game!

Note: An example of a COMBO game is "Epic spell wars of the battle wizards: Duel at Mt. Skullzfyre" (https://www.cryptozoic.com/games/epic-spell-wars-battle-wizards-duel-mt-...)

This game's design is to use "Take That" combos to deal damage to your opponent(s). And it can play up to six (6) players.

Note 2: This game (Epic Spell Wars) shows you what a "Take That" kind of game looks like. If you want to have "Take That" as the primary mechanic, your game will most likely be something similar to a duel game rather than a 4X type of game (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate).

Take That as a "mechanic"

Meanwhile in the context of using "Take That" as a mechanic, there are many games that use this as a secondary mechanic. Take for example my Work-In-Progress "Tradewars - Homeworld". It uses "Take That" for it's Tactic cards and is 25% of the entire game.

So "Take That" is pretty serious - but not the primary focus. Those cards are specifically used to "enhance" starship battles and sway the odds of a victory from one player to another.

It's as "Take That" as can be!

Many games that deal with cards use "Take That" cards to complement their design. As an example, I have already stated "Monopoly Deal". This has a few "Take That" cards that make game play interesting when you play...

"Magic: The Gathering" is another example, they use "Instant" cards which can be used at any time - and affect the game in some way or another.

I'm sure other designers can chime in with other designs that use the "Take That" mechanic... There are many.

Other *subtle ways*

The other thing is that "Take That" mechanics can be embedded into the game and be seamless. For example in my Work-In-Progress "Monster Keep", each Mercenary or Monster card has a Basic Attack and an Advanced Attack. Both attacks cost tokens to use. However the Advanced Attack usually does more damage than the Basic Attack.

This sort of "subtle" mechanic can be seen as a "mini" "Take That" mechanic since you are effectively causing more damage that your Basic Attack...

So "Take That"!

Cheers...

Take That games

Thank you so much for your input. I am now trying to get some drafting mechanics and storytelling with a little bit of bluff. I still have to figure out how it works but i will probably post updates soon. Good luck with your projects too!

Cheers!
