Most games have a place where you put cards that have been discarded, used, destroyed, spent, whatever you want to call it. A place where they can't be used anymore. Magic: The Gathering and Yugioh call it the Graveyard. My game, Shattered Empires, is a SciFi CCG, so I didn't feel that graveyard was quite appropriate for it. I've been going with the name Scrap Pile, but it's not really that glamorous of a name. I would love to hear suggestions or tell me if that name works.

For information about the game, to see sample cards, or just to see how the game is developing, check us out on facebook at www.facebook.com/shatteredempires

Thanks for all your help!

Black Hole - swallows

Black Hole - swallows everything

Space Debris
Background Radiation
Asteroid Belt

Doesn't Matter - Matter that doesnt have a use :)

The labels you could employ will also depend on what other space terms are in the game and their usage - eg salvage.

There are lots of other theoretical terms - introduced by scientists who cant explain things, but need to make something up to test/find to secure research grants. And various barnpot ideas.

Like the English guy at the Hadron Collider (the worlds biggest and most expensive roulette wheel) who is trying to make black holes.

'They will be small and only exist for a short time so they should be safe' er yer right - seriously hoping he doesnt suceed to put that one to the test.

Scrap Yard

I prefer Scrap Yard (or Scrapyard) to Scrap Pile. Just sounds better to me. You could have a placeholder card (or playmat) with a nice outer space vista of space debris extending as far as the eye can see...

Either way, though, it depends on how much "hardware" (ships, equipment, etc.) there is in the game, compared to other cards like events and people. If the majority is hardware, then Scrapyard is fine, even if it doesn't "make sense" for event cards. If it's a more even split, then a more generic name like BubbleChucks' "Black Hole" suggestion is probably better. Other possibilities:

The Void
Deep Space
Trash Compactor
Wormhole

I second "The Void." Though,

I second "The Void."
Though, if cards often come out of it, how about calling it "Cryo"?

More

The Vacuum
The Lagrange Point
The Event Horizon
Apoapsis
Junk Orbit

Might have to look a few of those up to get their true meanings, but you will find all would be appropriate for your purpose.

Scrap Yard

I like the idea of using Scrap Yard rather than Scrap Pile. The other names, like Black Hole, don't work, mostly because there are recursion abilities to pull things out of the Scrap Yard, in addition to being able to shuffle the entire damned thing back into your deck. Thank you all for the suggestions!

Personally I feel like you

Personally I feel like you should try and use a single word. For example in my game Zodiak Legends I use "Abyss". Things in the Abyss are lost but not forgotten and can be returned later in the game if need be.

Naming Convention

A lot of the names aren't quite in line with what the game does, though they would definitely be interesting to use. I want to keep the idea of it's a place where things go when they are used and broken, but still available to be salvaged. The removed from the game effects, however, will be "Lost" in Space. =)

depending on the level of

depending on the level of sci-fi and what the game is about diffrent things may aply is it a space exploration style game or an intergalatical warfare sort of game?

the "sciency" name of the location where space stuff goes once it becomes obsolete is "graveyard orbit"
but i might see a tiny issue with that name

other names
"The scrapyard at the end of the universe"
"the repair stop"
"pluto"

The Type of Game

Shattered Empires is an Intergalactic Warfare sort of game. The main combat centers around two or more factions vying for control of an area. Victory is based on destroying your opponent's base. You are generally located in deep space, though there may later be orbital combat. Lots of expansion possibilities in the game.

Slightly off topic: game title

Hi again. SE, I love the name of your game, Shattered Empires, but I know that Twilight Imperium has an expansion titled "Shattered Empire". Any concerns about that?

Naming Conventions

When I checked into registered Trademarks, Shattered Empires was not trademarked. When I googled it, there are only two things that really came up. The Twilight Imperium Expansion, which shouldn't be a problem, since their game is actually called, Twilight Imperium: Shattered Empire, which makes it a completely separate thing.
