PvP Combat Deckbuilder?

I'm back with yet another deck building game question. Assuming a deckbuilder was to be played using the traditional style of "discard your hand and draw 5 new cards", but also included direct player vs player combat, how would you expect the combat system to work? Most deckbuilders don't have costs or restrictions on the number of cards you can play aside from Dominion, but I'm guessing you'd have to create some kind of cost or restriction Allow me to provide an example. Lets choose a traditional fantasy scenario of a wizard fighting a wizard by summoning creatures and attacking with them. Without costs or restrictions, I can simply empty my hand onto the table and summon five creatures every single turn. This doesn't sound very successful.

Thoughts?

For player vs player battles,

For player vs player battles, in a deck building game, see Rune Age. It's an awesome deck building game which includes PvP or Player vs AI battles.

Originally I was going to use a deckbuilding mechanic for my game but I decided not to. I'll share some of the basic ideas that I had for it originally though:
Have the players have spells, weapons, armour etc.. that stays in play in front of them at all times. Playing cards from your hand can be used to activate what you have in front of you, you can also play some cards to boost the cards (dice were involved with resolving things). The number of cards you draw each turn as well as how many you could retain in your hand without having to discard them at end of turn it unplayed is determined by how heavy your armour is as well as your swiftness score.

In emmerlaus, players could play 1 spell per turn. So if you put in play a piece of equipment, you are actually not attacking this turn. From what I remember is that there was no restrictions for equipment, only 1 spell per turn, counter spells does not count since they are not done in your turn. Some spells allow you to cast an additional spell (ex: a spell that boost a spell)

Take a look at this game for inspiration. The original game is in french but I did en english review on BGG where I detailed every card:
