Hi all!

My first post in New game ideas place so be gentle :)

Just some history about the idea (dont worry its only few words)
I wast jogging with my wife and I was wondering desining somethin very very very simple game and then out of the blue the idea "popped" to my head.

What if you toss 4 different colored dies and each color is a direction (left, right, up and down).
The board where the chicken moves on has 10x10 squaers (or more).

The idea is to toss the the dies and decide which you are going to use. You can use both up and down if for example up is 6 and down is 2 and you need to go up just a bit ;)

This could be a game for 1-4 on a board.

What you guys think?

Simple games may be the best ones.

Please give us a bit more information. What is the overall target? Who is the winner and at what point?

Overall target

Well the point of the game is to get from point A to point B faster than the other player(s) or you can play it solo.

I was thinking this game could be mainly for children to learn math, direction etc.

Some rules need to be set like: you have to use atleast two of the dice wether it is up AND down for moving.

Good purpose

The educational aspect of this game is favorable.

How to differ it from all other games that practice basic skills is a troublesome question.

Compass dice are already available so you could use them rather than up, down, left, and right because what is left and what is right depends on which side of the board your sitting on.

Compass dice was new to me so thanks for it :)

Slight change to the idea.
So instead of going "up" or "down" the board it self could have colored edges. One side is red and other blue etc. so that way everyone knows which way to go :)

I just playd one game of it and it took me 13 turns for a 2 player game.
I can see it can take alot more than just that.
The board size was just 9x9 squares so I could put the corn in the middle of it.

Suggestion

Since there are only 4 directions but 6 sides on standard dice, perhaps you could have some other properties on the dice. One of my favorite elements of Sorry! is the various effects like switching places, moving four backward or splitting up a 7 between two tokens which adds just the small bit of strategy the game needs to avoid being a bland Candy Land.

Perhaps you could use the extra spaces on the dice similarly to shake up game play a little bit.

As I got it, there are no extra spaces: you have four dice, each with an individual color corresponding to one direction, each with numbers 1 to 6 (or 0 to 5 perhaps).

I didn't get that part

Ah I misunderstood. I thought you had 4 dice each with multiple colors on them causing your chicken to run around in odd directions as the colors game up since it was a "blind" chicken race.

Sounds like a neat filler game. If you could post the full rules necessary to play, I'd gladly test it. (already have a 9x9 board from my own game prototype I could use).

Rules for "Direct the Blind chicken"

Players start from the corner of the gameboard and try to get to the middle first.

In turns each player toss 4 dice (or 1 die 4 times) for each direction.
Lets say each direction is a color so that way each player knows which way to go.

From these 4 directions the player can use 2-4 numbers.
For example player's toss comes up: 3 up, 2 down, 1 left and 6 right. If the player needs to go just 1 up and 5 to right he can use ALL the dices. 3 minus 2 down = 1 up, 6 right minus 1 left = 5 left.

Or if the player needs to go just slightly up he uses 3 up and 2 down to get 1 up movement.

If the player hits the wall thats end of that direction. Example: player is just 1 step from left wall and die gives 6 left so if the player uses it the rest 5 goes for nothing.

Winner is the first one that lands in the middle of the board.

Hopefully these are all the rules that this game requares.

Tell me if there are something I missed (plus people tell me I explain oddly even in my native language)!
I've been busy with my other game which will be tested by group of people tomorrow.
I hope they like my game and gives me good feedback.

Ok, I actually tested it before you posted this, and I tried with selecting 2 numbers exactly. Seemed to take quite long that way (didn't count exactly the rounds but probably close to 20).

You need one more rule: what if player's obstruct each other?

  • Can two players stay on the same square?
  • Can they step through other players?

BTW. I wanted to ask -- would you mind if I included a variant of "Direct the blind chicken" in Lines of Fire? It seems like it would be a fun bonus mode for my game -- it already has a 9x9 board and players start in the corners. Though the gameplay is not at all similar. My game also has an alternative hex board and maybe your game could work on that as well.

Not saying I definitely want to include it -- I still want to test it first, and I have to think whether I want to add additional components such as several dice and color markings on the sides. My board also has wall spaces on it (in a regular pattern) so my version would probably not allow players to move through the wall spaces, which might make the game too long.

Sure :)

You can use variation of the game if it fits for your game.

About the needed rules:
Can two players stay on the same square?
- Yes they can (might be good idea to have a big squares so the figures fit)
Can they step through other players?
- Yes they can.

Extra rule that might ease the game.
Players can have one time to use just one direction.
This way I hope the game is shorter thus more fun.
