Hi Guys,
I am a total noob and I have been struggling with to come up with the mechanics of a game. I have been starting and stopping because of a lack of ideas for a while now.

Ok, the target market is for newly singled or divorced people to play with their friends. What I have got so far, is the board represents the husband or X-boyfriend after the separation.

Players work with the newly divorcee to extract as much money from the board (the X husband)
as possible.

This where I just loose the plot. Can someone help with a possible game mechanics.?
or objectives. If I need to start again because my idea suck(lol) let me know as well.

Thanks

Hi,
I´d say the objecive is simply (get as much money as you can) so the game can end if someone has a determinated amont, or if the ex-husband has no money left.
There are a lot of mechanics to make money, but for the theme i´d say it should be something easy. Maybe collectind sets. For example, if you have 3 cards indicating he had an affair, you can take 10.000 $. Or for every check you draw, you get 500 $ ...
Maybe you can spend money you got to higher a lawyer or a detective so you get more cards or or don´t need as much cards go get money.
Good luck!

This game idea makes me uncomfortable

This game idea makes me uncomfortable.

Personally, if I'd just broken up or was in a divorce, I think I'd want games to distract me from it, from the pain and sadness that go along with breaking up. I'd definitely not want a game to focus on the negative, dig-up-dirt-to-grab-more-money aspect of it. (Unless I was really hateful because my partner abused me or something, I suppose.) This portrayal of breaking up as a game seems to imply that my whole relationship was just a cold thing between two people in it for the money, a game where 'the most money wins'.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, breaking up is a sensitive thing and I think it deserves to be treated with more respect than a grab-the-most-dough-off-your-ex game.

I tend to agree with Koen.

I tend to agree with Koen. This theme seems to be spitefull, very cold and mercenary. However, the theme of your game is up to you. I imagine its purpose is to let off some steam but I don't know if changing bitterness to greed is a healthy way to go. What if you modified it some? What if each player was a lawyer going after deadbeat dads(or moms), cheating husbands or wives, chasing ambulances, or freeing the wrongly accused. You could have a duel scoring system of money and justice. To me this would remove the game from being too personal and vengeful while keeping a sense of justice for those wronged.

thanks, for all your input. I

thanks, for all your input. I thought it might be a touchy subject, but I was targeting the divorce party market. I was hoping to somehow strike a balance between freedom and letting off the weight of marriage.

Not sure how to do this though.

It's time to face reality.

As a divorced mother and as a person who has been studing Psychology for YEARS, I have to post my comment on this game idea. I know for some of you it sounds disturbing and such however as I said I am divorced, have been since 2008 after a 15 year relationship. I do have to say that the idea of this would, to me, would have been at least a hour or two distraction to what I was going through. IT'S JUST A GAME PEOPLE! It's not a teaching tool in the art of breaking up and or divorce. I did not take my ex husband for anything at all but like I said the thought of this game would have been a beautiful distraction at the time. I believe this game could be marketed and sold at maybe Spencers or something of the like.
I feel like if you have never gone through the concept of the game that you really shouldn't shoot someone elses ideas down.

Money vs. Something else

In the interest of full disclosure: I'm a divorcee myself...Ancient history. :)

I think it would be interesting to have a sort of auction mechanic, where players bid for an opportunity to afflict the poor sap stuck in the middle. This way, players could use some kind of currency to bid for a chance to take resources of some kind from the "pot." The resources they collect from the pot could then be turned into more cash, or victory points towards winning the game.

Maybe it's a blackmail game of sorts, where you coerce the dude in the middle to doing risque/untoward stuff (bid your cash or some other currency) that will eventually put him in trouble with his spouse or significant other...Then at a certain point you feel you have reached the victory threshold of the game, you "go public" in an attempt to ruin the poor sap in the middle. If you end up having allocated more of your winnings into victory points than all the rest of your opponents, then you win the game.

Just a few thoughts...It puts more "I wonder what my opponent has up their sleeve" into the bidding war.

Good luck with your game. :)
