card game mockup

A couple days ago I had an idea for the layout of an online card game.
I had a long discussion with my friend and came up with a card game with him.

At the start you choose your alignment:
- Humanity
- Nature
- Darkness
- Destruction

This will decide where you start in the game and what deck you start with.

Card types:
- Unit(s)
- Creature
- warlord (leader)
- spell
- items
- spellbook (certain type of item)
etc.

Each deck requires a leader.

During a battle (on your turn) you can place your units and creatures onto your side of the battlefield.
There is more rules and stuff but I am just looking for feedback so far (especially on the mockup).

When does trading takes place?

Will players be able to trade in game trading cards after each win or rounds per session of quests to become a better player in your game?

I was thinking...

Players could have some of their cards up for sale so that anyone can offer for it (like a trade binder).

I am also thinking that players can make their own clans and battle for territory on different planets (accessed by portals). You can buy cards to help defend some territory (I was thinking each clan could have cards JUST for defending, these cards are easier to get than normal cards since you have to defend a lot of territory). There could be great rewards for having territory on planets (different prizes for different planets. The prizes are very useful especially for people new to the game).

Some prizes include:
- cards
- clan cards
- gold
- tokens (not sure what to name these but they could be used for buying special booster packs and/or participating in certain events)
etc.

To challenge some powerful clans there could be NPC guilds that spring up and attack powerful guilds.

Token idea

You can have the token idea for trade and costs of Jump Gate Cards. These cards does what it says. Allow player units jump to planet to planet across the universe. The higher the cost the farther away the planet.

I like that!

Having a price to move through portals is a great idea, It might also make it harder for powerful clans to defend themselves!

So heres the uses for tokens:
- special booster packs
- special events
- using a portal
- trading for cards

Also sometimes when a new card set comes out there could be a new planet.

More token details

Tokens can be aquired by quests, tasks, survival on the battlefield, special events. Mind you not all at once but in rounds or how about using a tier tree? Or something like that.

Terrain cards

Terrain cards can play a part of unit effects and creature effects to use for gain the upper hand on opponants?

portal/location

In terms of having some additional meta strategy, what about having the portals not all be cross linked? That way you could provide incentive to hold territory on certain planets because it provides access to other areas. Certain neutral planets could access many areas (and be arenas for fights), but you need to take some territory on planet X or Y in order to get to planet Z where there are some extra things to do or valuable resources.

The cost for travel could be a token(s) for movement through a gate, anyone who has territory on a planet gets a certain minimal number of tokens per unit time (some planets might give you more) and the rest need to be acquired through battles.
Good luck

Portal links and other things

Yes, of course each portal or jump gate would not be visible until the mission (main storyline), tasks or objectives are complete. I was just thinking of side mission jump gates. These side or added unit, leader storylines can come into play if the player so chooses to read or listen added content to your game. This would be a great place to add some special events in these side mission storylines?

Other things

Equipment cards, transportation cards, resource cards. Weapon cards. Story cards? Material building cards.

hmm...

I don't think there should be not be cards that cannot be used in battles. What exactly do you mean by equipment? because there will be cards that you can be able to equip on your units and creatures.

As an extra part of the game there could be in-game items you have to collect which tell part of the storyline. Once you have all these items in a set you can put them together to show the whole story at once. There could be many different sets which could show:
- The history of different planets
- storyline of the game
- Important characters in the storyline
etc.

If there are resources how would they work?

Equipment and resources

I added it to the list cause I didnt see of what we talked about so far. Resources to materials to build or combine cards for weapons, armor, and probably build bunker cards or broken or fix jump gates.

Sounds complex

I will just make it so that you can buy things with gold (including upgrades for territory and such).

I don't think portals/jump gates should break down since they will be shared by EVERYONE on the game (unless there was a special event where they break down and everyone works together to fix them).

What would bunker cards do?

What would the use of weapons and armour be?
I started thinking of this and the only use for it that I thought of was equipping on your leaders/warlords to give them more abilities (this may be interesting).
Is this what you were thinking or was your idea different?

Coming back to the building mechanic, I think clans should be able to upgrade parts of their territory (benefits defences and such).

Bunker cards

Bunker cards can be bought or built from objects on the field or found on the field to cover the units from an attack. The card is laid on top of the unit for half of the defense or all of the defense cost? After the bunker card is destroyed, it gets discarded. Unless you want your units out in the open. Bunker cards don't appear often as well.

Weapons and Armor

Yes to answer your question. What about each unit on the field? Will the some type of weapon or armor to use? What about the different types of units for each faction? Strength, health status, defense status, action points to move around on the field, if at all? Weapon range, spell range: if any? Attack points?

Theme

I would assume your game is a science fiction trading card game, due to the jump gates? Or something entirely different?

It is fantasy

That is why I use the term portal rather than jump gate.

Okay

Have you come up with creatures or units for your idea?
