Since my dad and father in law both passed away this summer, I've been thinking a lot about life after death.

I think a game with a theme of someone who just died traversing into the afterlife might be interesting. Don't have any ideas for mechanics yet. Maybe they have to battle to prevent getting stuck in limbo, or maybe they get sweet powers to move objects in our world.

I think it'd be an awesome

I think it'd be an awesome theme for a game. I like to see (and am designing currently) games that deal with deep topics, things that get players thinking on a meta level and not just with the game. You should start designing it

I assume you've read Dante's Divine Comedy?

I agree that this could make a good game, but it has to give at least a nod to Dante's Divine Comedy and other literature which has explored this theme. I think that there's a possibility of a great game, there, and you definitely should pursue it.

Some thoughts:
Players should have different personalities, defined by different win conditions. One player might win if he is the only one to overcome the obstacles and temptations and reach 'heaven,' whereas another might have as his primary objective to help at least N of the other players to reach 'heaven.'

There should be side-goals that act as the temptations a soul has to avoid. For instance, an early, fairly easy obstacle gives 'victory markers' each time you defeat it, which count as points later on. However, they only count as points if you actually achieve heaven, so spending too long accumulating victory markers will ultimately make you lose.
