counter design.jpg

Hi,

i'm designing my own board game and i found myself in little dilemma regarding game visual design.

it is going to be kingdom builder game (medieval themed) with counters that will represent various units.

now, i'm thinking about few counter colour schemes (can be found in attached image) but i would like to hear your feedback... which is most distinctive or appealing to you.

other thing that i'm thinking about is whether to have silhouette art on counters or full colour.

thx & br :)

I like silhouettes better in

I like silhouettes better in general (and they are also a lot less common these days) but you might want to find some that look more like medieval knights and less like "here is the men's room".

Regarding your current layout (not sure if you want feedback at this stage, but...) the colored field at the bottom of each counter can be tricky to cut properly (by hand or with a machine), you probably want to have some margins around all content (and colored boxes like that is content).

6 numbers on the bottom of each counter is a lot. Most games have 2 or 3 numbers. Any more than that and the remaining ones are usually elsewhere on the counter. Even if you intend to do huge counters that has room for 6 numbers, it would be difficult to learn the order of those values having all of them on a single unsorted(?) line. In almost all games I have ever played, movement is in the bottom right corner. Things that could be easily overlooked and then annoy players or playtesters at an early stage.

Also, you might find this useful:

colors

The colors look good to me, except maybe the red text on black background I can barely read. I would vote for number 4. The text is clear, and it looks better to me with less things changing colors to indicate sides.

I like number 3 here, but

I like number 3 here, but think it would look better with higher contrast, especially the red background. It's not a good idea to change text colour like number 2: players will think it means something. I also agree that the stats need to spread out more: clarity has to trump flavour if you are going to have a bunch of these. It would also be nice to have some iconography for each stat.
