Ok I did the prototype and all the testing already.

I'm looking for a designer and artist at the moment but need to know for a good
card game publisher.

I look the publishers in the previous post and only Panda has some about cards; but I need some more
"orientation" about all the aspects in the "making" of a, in this case, a living card game.

Thanks

Please Clarify

I am unclear on some details. Games are either self published or licensed to a publisher. I am not not sure which you are interested in. If you are self publishing then you need an artist, printer, and maybe a distributor. If you are licencing the game to a publisher they will do the art, the printing, and have the contact with a distributor.

What do you need a "designer" for? Do you mean graphic designer?

when you say "the previous post" do you mean this thread (http://www.bgdf.com/node/6236)? So, you are looking for a printer for your game that you plan to self publish?

If you are looking for a publisher I can tell you about my own search. I can't help with self-publishing or finding a printer though.

Clarifying

Thanks for the reply Horatio.

Either case I need some advice.

Almost all the cards in the prototype has the "magic the gathering" modern template; some has a template used in D&D 4th ed. I need a designer to do the template for the five types of cards and the game icons; moreover all the cards have pictures from the web need the my own art for the game.

I´m in Mexico and didn't find, at the moment, some place to do at least the art. I try to do a "contest" in a school (even with the teachers) but sincerely the work was lame.
Then the printer is another topic.

I will gladly licensed the game to a publisher first if the game is created (good quality) and second if I can continue with the design progress; but companies are not interested in games "not asked for".

Then, as a "self publisher", don't know how to really start.

Thanks again

PS: Yes; that was the post I refer.

Have you ever ran a business and if so what sort?

business

No. Never ran a business, at least formal.

I have 2 years now as independent (freelancer) professor. Teaching maths, chemistry, physics as a particular tutor and 3 or 4 computational courses in companies.

This is a sort of a business but I am alone. Moreover have more than 7 years designing games, some educational and really love it.

Recently I'm studying about business how to make a business plan, a investment return (ROI), all about having a brand, all of this but only have a month in this aspect.

In the case of a designing game company I only find four companies that make games in Mexico, here we have some good stores (retailers) connected with important game companies (FFG and Rio Games for example) and I test, at least with the owners the game I talk in the original post. I'm trying to form an alliance with those designing companies but one simple shout me down, the other only I know it by email and the 3rd one is as new as I am. (but they already are a company I'm only one lol). The last one has other ideas about games.

Well I need to learn a lot of business and more about making games. I'm "green" but really want to do something with all the ideas, and designs I have. As a designer I think all are great but when I test the games find I easily can correct the mechanics, have new ideas for better game experience and more. At the last the products are liked by my friends and students and the two store owners.

Now I need to really produce this games, I have some in "bibliography" cards!! lol. Or in virtual table (OCTGN).

All help, advice, recommendation, book or similar will be much appreciated.

Knowing how to write a

Knowing how to write a business plan is a good starting place. The board game industry is unlike any other businesses that I have been involved in, effectively it an entertainment industry so there is more than just pure business to learn.

To get your feet wet with getting over your head you want to get into an apprenticeship, informally that is. You can do this by volunteering to help another publisher at conventions. I have done this with Mayfair games for years and still learn something new about production, distribution, licensing, IP disputes, sale, marketing etc… every time. You’ll also get to know people in the industry which is unusually tight knit, it seems everyone knows everyone else or at least the people that have been around for a while do.

After you feel like you have some idea what going on and have all the legal stuff in order consider joining one of the many trade organizations such as GAMA (http://www.gama.org/), they have a lot of services that are helpful for beginners.

Good Luck.
