Here's a great article by the creator of "Spelunky" about how to actually FINISH making a game. The article is specifically about video games, but much of the advice in this article can cross-over into the realm of developing and publishing board games:

Great article

What a great article! I agree with everything the author said.

When people ask what I do (most people think I play games and have fun all day), I tell them...
I play the same game several times a day for weeks at a time. At some point in every game development cycle, when we think the game is completely designed, I push through play after play until I want to throw the game across the room.

This is the MOST important time in the process. This is when I must step back from the game for a day, then come back to it and ask - "What am I most frustrated with? What part of the game is hard? What part of the game do I least look forward to playing? Which chart am I sick of referencing? Which rule do I still need to think about?"
If all these frustrating parts of the game suddenly disappeared, would it be completely fun?

These answers MUST be addressed. We then work for a few more days or weeks, fixing each frustration. With any luck, we end up with a game that is completely fun and frustration free.

After the game is successfully sent to the printer, I can sit back, relax, and talk with people who think I play games and have fun all day.

Late Playtesting

Related to finishing, one thing I struggle with is getting through late playtesting. I enjoy thinking up a game and even the grind of making a prototype. I enjoy giving it a "proof of concept" playtest, and evn some more change-then-playtest cycles after that. But once it is 90% there my excitement starts to wane. I start thinking about new projects. Playing the same game several times is not interesting to the designer in me.
