Hello BGDF Community,
I am a boardgame designer located in germany - maybe some of you remember me from the old BGDF forums. Back in the days I designed an abstract conflict simulation, rules and units have been reworked and playtested over a long period of time. To make a long story short: Almost 2 years ago, my project disappeared, mainly because I was not able to gather enough players. Back in the days I could not decide the game to be a miniature or a card game - I used tokens to playtest wich where not easy to share with other players.

Now - almost 2 years later - my game is back. The name of the old game changed (it was called 'Godsend') to ARCHON. And I changed the way the game is meant to be played to a "Virtual CCG". This means that I changed my oppinion about how to create, release and maintain such a project from ground up:

a.) The game is completely virtual, it only exists in the internet.
b.) It uses cards wich are pretty, easily recognized and accepted by a wide range of players.
c.) It will be expanded on a regular basis, wich means it is more or less collectible.
d.) It uses the LackeyCCG engine wich is available for Windows, Mac and Linux (for free).
e.) Best of all - Its free - forever

Some excerpts from the rulebook (more or less badly written), followed by an introduction into the game - this should help to understand the concept a little bit more:

"We are the gods - A family of immortal beings. The destiny of the mortal world is unending conflict. Our ultimate ambition is to rule over all living things. Our eternal livelihood is far away from the mundane world of man and beast. We use our minions to execute Gods war, to fight and conquer places of power, all over the universe. The god whose worshippers conquer the most of these sacred places, seals the downfall of all others. They are our connection to your world - The only way to bring our influence to bear, And thus we spawn our children into the realms. They are Godsends, to wage the war to end all wars - For one of us, to reign, eternal!"

Summary of Play
In the ARCHON game - players take the roles of gods - competing to ascertain the king among them, through a divine game. Using customized warbands (called covens) of cards, a hex-tile gameboard and several tokens they let their minions fight a power struggle to become the rulers of a fictitous world called Ascendallion. From turn to turn the players perform actions like spawning powerful minions, discovering strange domains, moving their minions around the board and let them battle. Players gain faith by expelling some of their cards into the aether and win the game through gathering six victory points. Those points are scored by controlling the most places of power on the gameboard, or by banishing enemy minions.

Finally the website for the game:

http://archon.zockergilde.net

Until now - there is not much on the website besides some nicely done card teasers and an introduction to the game. This post was made to announce that the project is not dead - and maybe there are some die-hard geeks out there who are interested in joining/playtesting the project.

Be aware of I.P. licensing...

Howdy Fhizban,

Your game uses the name and logo (on the card backs and on your web site) of the old 80's video game Archon. It's important to note that the Archon license is still active. React Games licensed the rights to the game in December of 2008:

http://www.reactgames.com/

You may want to consider renaming your game. You're making a computer game about dueling monsters called Archon; there's potential for market confusion between your product and the one by React Games. This makes you vulnerable to a possible "cease and desist" notice. You're obviously putting a lot of time and effort into your game, and I'd hate to learn that you'd been stopped.

Best of Luck,

Jonathan

PS: I know you're not selling your game. That's academic. A license holder can ask you to stop whether you're selling your product or giving it away. - JAL

Hey Jonathan, I remember you

Hey Jonathan,
I remember you from the old BGDF board. Thank you for the information - I already know that, AND I know that I am breaking the law here. What should I say? At the moment I am more concerned about the card images I am using. But what should I do? I love the old Archon Theme and Style AND I love to use painted miniatures as card pictures.

Maybe, if someone really forces me (like Wizards of the Coast do VERY OFTEN) then I change everything. Until then - I think I leave it as it is. This is my year long pet project, its in the niche of a niche of a niche - and its free. Again, I know that its not legal *sigh*.

Marketing vs. Shakespeare

What's in a name?

My 2 cents.... you can do it your way, but the minute you make a dime off it things that Wizards did may no longer apply.... they could take dimes.

Well guys, I think that you

Well guys, I think that you are right. While drinking coffee I decided to change the name.

My game has not really something to do with Archon anyway (besides battling monsters) - so I will change it. Just thinking about promoting something that is already copyrighted makes it feel wrong. I should not put boulders in my way right from the start. Forget what i posted above.

So, the game was previously called Godsend - wich I dont really like. Archon is copyrighted and the game is about gods who send minions into a arena to battle for supremacy and faith in one single god.

Its cheesy - but the easiest thing would be to change the name simply into GODS.

By the way...

I'm not trying to make your life difficult. I just don't want to see you get hurt by other people stopping you from completing your game with nasty legal attacks. I really, truly do wish you the best of luck in your project.

Thanks for taking our advice.

@Jonathan: No thats really

@Jonathan:
No thats really not a problem at all. I have to change a lot of text and redo some of the artwork. But better now than later. And - by the way - no one can really know in wich direction a project like this evolves in the future.

@All:

There are some things that i cannot change right now - the artwork for example. I do own the rights for all textures and stuff - but not for the card art. For now i have to go with what i have got and hope all goes well.

But - to get this discussion back on the track: has someone taken a look at my website, does someone remember the project?

Feedback? Card Layout especially? Rules follow this evening, name change will be finished until end of the week.

Can someone already imagine how this game is meant to be played? Even if not - Ideas? Brainstorm kinda stuff?

*bump* So the pantheon of

*bump*

So the pantheon of gods has spoken, this project shall from now on listen to the name:

GODS & MINIONS.

I'll be spending the rest of this week, and next week on reworking the various titles used in the game, on the cards and on the website.

LackeyCCG

It uses the LackeyCCG engine

This looks like it can only be used in real time. I think you might get more players if the game was playable turn-by-turn.

This is actually a very good

This is actually a very good point!

So, my game is basically a cardgame wich can be played the traditional way or via any electronic device available. I am not fixed to LackeyCCG and already had a look at other programs.

The simple question is: wich program is available/recommendable?

LackeyCCG has four ultimative advantages (this was why i have choosen it):

1. Its free
2. It runs on Windows, Mac and Linux
3. Its more or less complete/stable
4. Its somewhat easy to use, not too cluttered with features

Any ideas?

To make something playable through your browser,

which can store information on games for users to come back to, I think you'd need to know how to use php and mySQL ?

Hey there,

Thank you for your reply - I am always interested in other peoples oppinions.

Yes, it might sound to be the best solution to code an online-application that is able to handle all the game turns and the player data. The simple answer is that this is just plain unrealistic. Dont get me wrong here: I work fulltime for a company that makes 50% of its profits using an online-shop. I work everyday with PHP and MySQL for more than five years now - but only concerning my job. Its not that a project like this is impossible - its just not what i want to do.

I want to design a boardgame, thats all. I dont want to spend half a year writing an online application. I spend most of my sparetime fixing errors in the rules and designing cards as well as new creatures and magicspells. thats what I like to do - and how i summarize my hobby. Not coding a database backend or a web-frontend for a anonymous mass of people.

Still I'd like to share my creation. and the easiest way is to use an engine that is already available. LackeyCCG has all the advantages I stated in the previous post - most important being free and fast.

I am a designer - not a programmer.

@all:

* the game website moved to its official home: http://www.godsandminions.com (the old links still work)
* newssystem is up

thats all for today - but there is in fact, a lot of stuff already in the pipeline.
