Hi!

We're in the process of designing a game to be played by friends during dinner parties. Centering around wine and wine tasting, this game is tongue-in-cheek fun and aims to unmask those amongst who claim to know everything about wine!

We're after someone to design:
- Logo for the game.
- Look and feel of all game elements.
- Layouts for eventual printing.

You'll be working with us as we develop the game (we have the game progression as well as a tested instruction manual) but we don't have any visual elements nor do we have an overarching look and feel - that's what we need you for!

Ideally you would have experience in designing 'text based' games. That is, games without many visual elements that require the players to follow a set of instructions to enjoy the game over the course of the evening. Think of things like 'How to Host a Murder' or 'Charades' and a lot of drinking!

Budget isn't huge but willing to pay for good work. Please let me know if you would be interested, a link to some previous work you've done and any questions you might have.

We are based in Australia (Melbourne) but would expect all work to be done remotely.

Thanks and looking forward to your responses!

Cheers,

Raph.

Do you have a completed

Do you have a completed prototype...everything you need to play, albeit without final artwork? Have you done thorough testing of the game? You say the artist will "be working with you as you develop the game," whereas ideally (and typically) final artwork is not commissioned until after the game is otherwise complete.

Just curious to know where the game currently sits; any info, pics, etc. you can share here to demonstrate the game will help you move this search for an artist along.

BTW I too am a self-professed "cork dork," so this game/activity sounds interesting!

I just want to clarify ...

For our designers "out-here" what are you looking for?

A> A Graphic Artist for Game Logo, Look & Feel, Layouts
B> An Illustrator/Artist to render the Box Cover of the game
C> A Game Designer to help you with the game's content

If you're looking for one person to fill those THREE (3) roles - you will be having a tough time.

If you need a "Game Designer" to collaborate on the game's content, how it is played, the game's mechanics, turn sequence, etc. you won't find someone who is also an Illustrator/Artist.

Same goes if you are looking for an "Illustrator/Artist", his talents and focus would be to design nice looking artwork for the game. He may be even able to design a Game Logo while designing a Box Cover.

Some "Graphic Artists" dabble in "Game Design" but the experience and background of these people lean much more to the artistic spectrum. You'll probably need one of these to design the Look & Feel for the game's assets (Cards, Rulebook, etc.)

To me, it sounds like you should make contact with all three (3) of these people and see what you can negotiate. Note everyone will want to probably be paid for said work. Like I said earlier - I *seriously* doubt you will find ONE person to do all of that.

So I'll wish you good luck and maybe if you clarify a little maybe you might find one or two people that may fit into more "clear" category.

Cheers.

Note: In terms of "Game Design", I you provide a link to your rulebook, I am sure one of the BGDF members will be more than willing to have a look at them. To see if they are understandable and well written. A few of us have been through Sanity Tests for our rulebooks - so we know the ideal format for rulebooks and can point out things to consider.

Also if you want help with some aspect of the game. Just say so and I bet one of the BGDF members will also be willing to help out. That's why this is a forum: "For ppl to post and answer questions/get valuable feedback."

I (personally) think that what you need is a "Graphic Artist" (Card layouts, rulebook, look & feel, etc.) We unfortunately don't have many of those on this forum.

You might find more ppl on BGG here: https://www.boardgamegeek.com/forum/974655/boardgamegeek/board-game-art-...

Good luck with your search!

Thanks for your reply!

Thanks for your reply Chris!

We have 'softcopies' of all the elements of the game - that is, a .doc file containing the rule book and mock ups of each item that would come with the game.

I'll see if we can share the rule book to the forum as all your feedback would be immensely helpful!

Haha, cork dork! Love it. Well, this game is aimed at you Chris. Once it's launched, we expect multiple purchases for you and your friends. ;) Thanks again for your comments.

Looking for a 'Graphic Artist'

Hi QuestCCG,

Thanks for your response. Apologies for not being clearer - bit of a newbie when it comes to game design.

We're definitely after A) the graphic designer/artist. We'd also hope they could do box art as it is quite a simple design we're going for. We're taking the role of 'Game Designer' ourselves but would possibly love the input of other designers out there! I'll see if we can share our rulebook and get some feedback/sense-testing.

Thanks again for your response. Feel free to share anything else you think might help! :D

Cheers.

What rate are you paying? You

What rate are you paying? You mentioned small budget, so I assume this is in the $25 USD range? Probably good to lay out your rates and schedule ahead of time, because "pay for good work" is 'I'm not a graphic designer, but I have a pirated copy of PS' amateur bait where I come from.

To give you an example, I received what I feel to be a very modest quote for a single cover illustration from a mildly successful artist, which included commercial rights, at $200 with me doing all of the layout if that sets your expectations a little.

Proposed rate.

Thanks Soulfinger,

Yes, we'd be looking around the $20-$25 USD range. As the work would involve little to no actual illustration (besides the design of the logo - the rest would be layout) we would be looking at a maximum number of hours in the realm of 5-7. So I'm guessing around $200 for the whole project. Does that sound completely impossible?

Again, newbies to this but comparing it to some other online sources, we'd need it to be cost effective.

I feel like maybe you are

I feel like maybe you are underestimating, but I'll pass this along to a friend. Aside from being a top-notch illustrator, he has a career in the liquor industry. Coincidentally, he is designing a game with a mutual friend who just moved back to the States from Australia.
