I just saw this contest mentioned at another news website and, having not seen it mentioned immediately here, thought that it should be mentioned here if it hasn't already.

HASBRO and Indiegogo are hosting a game contest called "The Next Great Game Challenge." The gist of it is that you submit a game to them, they pick 5 finalists, those 5 finalists run an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds and then HASBRO chooses a winner.

I haven't reviewed the terms and conditions yet but people interested in learning more can go to the link below.

IP Ownership

The contest is only open to US residents, which counts me out, but also the IP Ownership clause is a little troublesome to me on first reading:

Hasbro wrote:
IP Ownership and No Expectation of Confidentiality. You retain ownership of all intellectual property rights in the Submission (as defined below) including any associated copyrights, trademarks, and/or patents that you may hold. You acknowledge and agree that each Submission will be made voluntarily and not in confidence. That means that neither your Submission nor anything in these Terms shall or may be deemed to place Hasbro in any relationship (including any confidential relationship) with you that is different from that of the general public with respect to the Submission. With respect to any characters, music, scripts, screenplays, storylines, and/or plot outlines (referenced herein collectively or separately as “Entertainment Materials”), you hereby waive any claim, action, and/or suit (collectively, “Claims”) against Hasbro, and/or Hasbro’s affiliates, distributors, customers, vendors, promotional partners, and/or licensees, and/or their respective officers, directors, employees, agents, and/or assigns, relating to any alleged use or misappropriation by Hasbro of any Submission. With respect to any aspects of any Submission other than Entertainment Materials, including but not limited to any toy, game, puzzle, or other product concepts, ideas, innovations, modifications, or improvements disclosed to Hasbro as part of the Submission, you hereby waive and forever discharge and release Hasbro, its affiliates, vendors, promotional partners, distributors, customers, and licensees, and their respective officers, directors, employees, agents, and assigns, from and against, any and all Claims relating to any alleged use or misappropriation by Hasbro of such aspects of any Submission.

My paraphrase is: "You retain ownership of the IP and copyright, but we if we reuse or redistribute your IP/copyright you can't sue us."

Am I reading too much into that?

Regards,
kos

Trust them.

It's a standard agreement which basically protects your IP while also protecting Hasbro from being sued because someone THINKS their IP has been stolen. You have to realize that most submissions in such an open contest will be unoriginal, already existing to some significant extent, or just plain bad. It takes a lot of time, money and energy to properly sort through it all...and Hasbro simply doesn't want to worry about some wingnut who swears they invented Catan, TTR and Pandemic before they came out serving them with a lawsuit hoping to take the settlement and run.

Hasbro is one of the best companies to work with, as a toy inventor speaking from experience. Their head of game acquisitions is a fantastic guy, and whomever should be talented enough to win this contest will have an amazing time partnering with them!

Dang

Got me excited for a moment until I realized it was limited to US residents.

Good tip though.
