Hey everyone!

I just wanted to announce that my first game, The Primary, is now live on Kickstarter! You can check it out here: https://goo.gl/skqxLE

The Primary is an election-themed board game of campaign strategy and tactics. Players compete as candidates within one political party, all vying to become the nominee for President of the United States! Plan your actions in order to gain influence and win regional delegates - you will travel across the country, host rallies, fundraise, advertise, and gain favor with powerful Super PACs. Win the most delegates and win the game!

Players: 1-5 (solo variant included)
Play Time: 45 minutes
Recommended Ages: 14+
Featured mechanics: action programming, area control, simultaneous action selection

You can find more information about The Primary below:

Clever little game

Matt,

Generally, I'm used to giving advice to people on myriad issues because it's their first created game, but clearly you've done your homework on areas I would consider key to running a successful KS:

- Funding Goal: $15K is the right amount for a relatively small game with few components (even at a 500-unit production run)
- Short Intro Video: You captured the essence of the game
- Play-through Video: Even at a shade over eight min, it's a great length
- Reviewers: You've nabbed some good reviewers for the game...good job!
- KS Page: Very clean, bright, and well-written w/wonderful photos/video

If there was one criticism, it's $35 for the game, plus an additional $8 or shipping...that seems steep to me, and while it's not a game that I need on my shelf, that may be a bit of a turn-off especially for folks who are either used to not paying for KS shipping (majority of my KS purchases) or paying for extremely heavy games (see Scythe and FEUDUM).

Great job...solid work!

Cheers,
Joe

When I checked out the KS video...

I was like @Joe... Impressed with the elegance of the design.

Just a technical question... Because I was unsure, each player gets TWO (2) of each political action card??? Said 70 cards, divided by 5 players = 14 cards each...

So I'm just assuming because the GIF seemed to have a rather LARGE hand (in the example) in the KS. And I didn't get a quick understanding about how many cards each player would have.

I concur, great job!

Matt, I love what I'm seeing

Matt,

I love what I'm seeing here. The game looks very streamlined, and it looks like a game that would appeal to all ages.

Your game looks great! I love the political theme, so thrilling. It looks well done and appears to be a fun group game. We are eager to receive it and give it a play! Best of luck on the campaign!

Thanks,

-Austin

Thanks for the feedback, Joe!

Just curious for future projects, would you have preferred a $43 pledge with free shipping? Or does the total amount for 1 game seem too expensive?

Let me try to clarify - each player has the same 14 card hand. It is comprised of: 1x Bus, 1x Plane, 3x Rally, 1x Positive Ad, 1x Negative Ad, 3x Fundraiser, and 4x Super PAC

Does that help answer your question?

Nicely done. You have a lot

Nicely done. You have a lot of pre-release review quotes on there. Do you have marketing money out as well? (Like an ad campaign on some sites, I mean)

Hey Jay!

Thanks! The only paid advertising I have done is on Facebook (and maybe $5 each on Twitter and Instagram on launch day) The $800 minimum on BGG scared me away. Do you have any other recommendations?

Yes... Your livestream also explained this as well. I like the Super PAC cards, very original... The game seems well designed. But I disagree that 11 is a better number of rounds than 12. 12 is a rounder number... 11 seems a bit ODD.

I watched the first 20 minutes which explained how to play the game.

Can you give some information about what other GAMES inspired you??? Or was this purely something of your own design (not so much in comparison with other games)?

The artwork is very nice too! The game has a very polished look to it... It seems like a very professional effort too. How long did it take to design??? A year or more!?

Cheers.

Re: questccg

I agree, at first 11 rounds felt a bit strange - but after a number of playtests, it never really was something that affected gameplay negatively. I really wanted to refine the experience and hone it down to the core "fun"

I honestly haven't been playing "hobby" board games for all that long, maybe just the past two and a half years. I'm not sure a lot of games provided direct inspiration (I hadn't really played an action programming game before) but the overall experience was probably tilted towards the light-medium games I was enjoying at the time.

Thanks, a big shout out to OK Art Studio for the graphic design and illustrations. I think they have really done a tremendous job.

I've been working on this for just over a year, but without too many other game design distractions on the side. I really wanted to focus on this and get it out on Kickstarter.

$43 is fine, $39 (or $49) even better

Matt,

I won't go into the science behind my statement, but suffice it to say there's been a lot of ink spilled on the topic of prices ending in a "9" and the level of attractiveness it conveys. I personally think $49 would be far too high for a deck of cards, a board, cubes, and a few pawns (basically the components for Pandemic), but rolling-in the cost of shipping is always appreciated.

Cheers,
Joe

Thanks!

Good insights - I wish the price had lined up better with a "9"

I also wonder if a $43 price with free US shipping would have scared away any backers up front, although the total price would be the same.

I think it's usually assumed to go the other way.. Rolling in shipping is a positive. There's a Stegmaier article about it, I'm pretty sure.

Yes, indeed!

Jay,

You're exactly right...anytime you can include shipping all the better.

Joe

Also, Jamey recommends if you

Also, Jamey recommends if you can't round to a '9', round to the nearest '4'. So in your case you'd probably go with $44 with free shipping.

Very Interesting...

I must operate backwards from most backers. I feel like a $44 pledge would have more of a tendency to scare me away and I wouldn't continue scrolling to learn more about the game.

If it were a $35 pledge, I would be more inclined to read on and learn about the game. Once I discover that shipping is $8 or $9, I would already be more invested / potentially excited about the game. Adding shipping in after clicking "pledge" wouldn't make me feel cheated at all.

I love the game

This game is so elegant. I basically learned the rules by quickly glancing at the rulebook, because everything is thematic and feels right.
I would definitely back it, but unfortunately I live in Austria and it is very expensive to get it here (the game, shipping+ import tax adds up to like 63$ or so).

Good luck with the Kickstarter campaign!

Yeah, personally I could go either way.

EU Friendly Shipping

Hey sh80action,

You shouldn't have to worry about import tax for The Primary! We will either be shipping from within the EU, or if it ships from outside the EU, I will reimburse the VAT.

Thanks for the kind words!
