A sound track for a board

A sound track for a board game could be intriguing. If board games and electronic devices merge, again, (think 1980's Stop Thief and Dark Tower) there could be a real opportunity here.

You may also look at the RPG community for collaboration. For example, Midnight Syndicate makes music that works well when campaigning. Wouldn't it be cool to get an RPG with music specifically composed for it. I'm sure this has been done, but it is not the norm. (www.midnightsyndicate.com/welcome.htm)

Also look at the game Space Alert (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/38453) . I really can't tell you much about it. Not sure if it is even released. But it comes with CDs that help to set the atmosphere, but moreover, I believe, effectively serve as game timers. I think it is mostly sound effects, but why not also add a layer of music as well. I find this very, very intriguing. Especially when adding a game expansion could be as easy as downloading an mp3!

So there might be some opportunity with board games, but you'll have to get creative!!

Board game sound track is of course not the same

Even if board game sound track would not be the same than video game, I really like the idea of playing a soundtrack in a board game. The only problem is that I never had a chance to do it. Most of my games are done at the concordia university cafeteria where there is no audio equipment available to create an ambiance.

Sountrack of movies, video games or anime is almost the only thing I listen in music.

It seem now that more games are coming up with a CD. I know that there is a zombie games that does so. I am really open to the idea.

If I were a violinist I would be offering my services to chess tournaments around the world. You pay me a handsome sum and I will let it all come out full force on those critical moments.

RPG Music

Making background music for rpgs is a great idea. RPGs are often meant to feel like a movie. As such, background music is a great thing. Unfortunately, there is almost not good background music for a fantasy setting. You can use a movie soundtrack (The Lord of the Rings or similar) but then everybody recognizes it because they've all seen the movie. There is very little good epic fantasy music that doesn't already have associations built to it.

Yah but what about budget?

Is it vary expensive for the soundtracks to be produced? I'm sure it is. In thought, it sounds cool. I played the first game I have ever seen a music soundtrack inluded, "A Touch of Evil". It was beautiful (and extremely short), but didn't provide anything unique to the experience. It wasn't even remotely comparible to the difference of haveing custum figureines or plain pawns. What's the use of spending the money? I have a large collection of Mozart, Back, Handel and other classical and rock music that I enjoy listening to while playing games and get just as much and more enjoyment from the music. A CD seems like a useless feature to me unless their are better out there.

There's unexplored territory here...

Actually, I keep coming back to the idea of a board game that's music-sensitive. Y'know, with cards that can only be played when there's a banjo playing, or cards that double their effect when no one is singing...

On a related note: I made up a game inspired by a Song Fight theme.

Jon That's an interesting

Jon
That's an interesting idea, with I-pods and what not, I would think it would be vary easy for people to use your music files there. I don't really have an opinion about what your doing.

What I had in mind though is board games that have a music CD that you play as background. I don't hate idea but just wonder that the production isn't worth it. I realised something that I hadn't really considered till now. In video games, I always turn off the music because it irritates me. And in movies and so on, I generally like the music if it's good music and done well.

Movies use music well because it's timed right to give you a feeling. A game can't really do that. Actually, now that I think of your idea Jon, you could be on to something close to that. However It still seems doubtful to me.

self created soundtracks

Oh I meant to say it's so easy for people to create their own music soundtracks these days. There is so much accessible music as well that works great. I had one artist in mind that I think works well with battle and adventure board games, or mixed with other artist to create soundtracks. I think "Loreena Mckennitt: book of secrets" would work great with a game.

I was intending tonight to

I was intending tonight to pull out a favorit game of mine called "A Touch of Evil". It includes a musci CD like I said. Some bump spoiled my game play mood.....but I was admiring the components in the box. You know, I don't know what kind of budget it take to produce such cool games but I must say....when it come to introducing unconventional aspect to a game, I have to admire the fact that they just managed to do it. I love this game and to me it's just different than so many others.
