Spam!

It seems like there is more spam in the forums here than any other site I've ever seen. Does this have anything to do with the site itself, or is it just that I haven't been looking at forums other than here, and BGG for a while?
(then again, there isn't this much spam in BGG forums.)
Now, would someone please tell me how I could acquire 3000g?

3000g

Btw, I would like to be told how to acquire that 3000g in broken English. That's just my preference.

P.s. If it's at all possible to get that information from a user who's been a member for less than 5 hours, I'd consider that a bonus.

Never mind

Never mind. I was going to say it was the fact that I used "free" in the subject line that attracted the spambot, since gofluxyourself's thread also got hit. But then I notice that *every* recent thread got hit. Lovely.

Spam and eggs

Wow. I wish I knew what 3000g was. I might need it.

(joke. I realize it's an advert for online gold farming)

I've never seen one break out like this - it's a rash all over the forums.

I woke up late

I woke up late than usual today. I stayed up working till 4am last night, so I woke up a little later than usual.

I'm at EST -2, and about once or twice a week I delete a ton of spam messages posted during the previous night. I guess the spammers are on the west coast or on the other side of the Pacific, given that they always post very late at night (for my local time).

I suspect BGG has even more spam than we do, but the have several full time admins, and we just have a couple voluntary ones, so it's more likely for spam to sometimes remain posted for a day or two.

As for what 3000g is, my guess, based on previous spammer attacks, is that it's Gold for WoW.

del it

Deleting all postst of the spammer seems a good idea. Any moderators here?

That's what I'm doing right now. You posted as I was writing my previpus post. :)

We admins always delete the spams posts. The best you can do is like shazzaz suggested, simply ignore the spam posts.

I didn't want to sound harsh...

I would like to make it clear that I don't think spam attacks are BGDF's fault, or that I don't think you guys do a good enough job of blocking / deleting them, or that I would stop using this site because of spammers.
You're just dealing with the same garbage as the rest of us, and you're doing an excellent job.
But would it be possible to add a captcha to the registration form to keep the bots away? Just a thought...

3000g was an important message

Guys, I can't believe that you deleted those very important messages. Don't you realize that we were being offered a unique opportunity? This company was actually willing to allow us to spend real money in exchange for virtual money and at a fraction of the cost! I mean, think of all the things that you can do with a virtual stash of 3000 colored pixels. And what were we likely to do with the actual money? Probably something dumb like investing for retirement.

Actually I think

the American dollar is currently worth less than the coloured pixel.

Ironic

Ironically enough, we were using captcha, and after several complaints about how difficult it was to register, we toned down the level of authentication that captcha was requiring. I guess we are now reaping that change.

captcha

I'm not sure the amount of spam has been affected by the captcha change. We had spam with the complex captcha, we still have it with a simpler one. Not sure spam is more frequent since the change, it might be, I just say I'm not convinced the captcha change had any significant influence.

Yep

It's really hard to quantify since you, myself and Zzzzz probably all have deleted spam without the others knowing about it. Perhaps we should log it?

Yes. Let's log it, so we have

Yes. Let's log it, so we have an accurate idea of how often we get spammed, and use that as a basis for whatever action we might take. I like that rather than acting merely from gut feeling.

How many people had a problem with it? considering that the one person that i saw complain was already registered when they did i would say it's not that big of a deal if you get it wrong on your first try or two.

Registering

I didn't have a problem registering back when I did, and then again with the 'new' site.

I also haven't noticed ANY of the spam, perhaps I log infrequently enough that its just gone before I see any.

Keep up the good work!

Maybe I should have been in bed.

I guess the fact that I tend to visit in the wee hours, (central time) when the spammers are doing their dirty work, may make it appear worse than it does to others.
