I personally would find it super handy to be able to subscribe to a thread & receive email alerts when new posts have been made. Ideally, I'd like to be able to do it for both posts I make and for other threads I find interesting.

Of course I hail from the land of Joomla, so I know little to nothing of Drupal, but I know it's a fairly painless task in a Kunena or Agora based forum, so I thought I'd throw the idea out there just in case!

I completely agree with this.

I completely agree with this. It'll be nice to hear some feedback about whether or not this is possible :)

I wish

I've looked in to this because I too would love for this to happen. The current implementation doesn't support that feature on its page. There IS an extension to add it but it would also require updating large portions of the drupal code base used here. And while I have admin rights on the site, a complete revamp and possible collapse of the site is outside my risk-zone and really not my call.

I will, however, pass this along to the others.

On it

We're pursuing this along with a general update. No promises.

In the mean time, if you look at the bottom of any forum thread you'll see a tiny orange RSS feed logo on the right side near the sidebar (check it out on this one).

That will lead you to a wonky html page that is the rss feed for that forum. If you use that weblink in an RSS feed reader you can get regular updates or email notfications (depending on your rss feed reader). This effectively "tracks" the forum.

For instance you can use http://www.feedly.com or http://www.inoreader.com to track the feed. Go now, and feed.

I remember in the old site, you could see the thread you did not read and mark them all read once you were done. But it's not exactly the same kind of feature

RSS does seems to do the job in a different way.

Email subscriptions have been set up on the site, so we'll be testing it out over the next few days to see how well it works.
