Greetings from Florida, and thank you for having me. My name is Geordie.

I am a gaming enthusiast whose roots lie in video games and CCG's. Several years ago I "rediscovered" board games with everybody's favorite gateway game: Settlers of Catan. Since then, my friends and I have slowly grown our personal collections, and we now play a variety of different board and card games. We have even designed a few "in-house" games, in addition to re-writing rules and creating "expansions" to existing games to enhance our overall experiences.

I enjoy the social aspect of gaming, be-it online video gaming with my friends who have moved away as a method of staying in touch, game-night at my house with pizza, alcohol, and good friends, or meeting new people via Friday Night Magic and the like. I also enjoy competition, and gaming tends to satisfy both my social and cerebral needs quite nicely in those regards.

I am here to hopefully contribute to WIP's and the general discussion, as well as to learn from the designers here. It is my ultimate goal to design and publish a game, but I am in no rush. I look forward to meeting you all in the worlds we create together.

Cheers,

Geordie

Greetings!

Hello and welcome, Geordie! The local scene here (Baltimore) for MTG and Yu-Gi-Oh seems alive and well, though I've yet to find many who have decided to take the leap into tabletop game design themselves. Best of success and fun with your future projects. :)

I've always felt like M:tG was missing something that board games offered, and board games were missing something that M:tG offered. Apparently the developer Codex, David Sirlin, felt the same way. It's like he was a fly on the wall during our in-house variants of Magic. Very cool to see someone besides Fantasy Flight taking a new approach to competitive card games.

Thank you for the warm welcome, everyone.

Serpent's Tongue

The idea of using a "Codex" is not "original". The "original" card game that uses a "book" to store your cards is "Serpent's Tongue":

I've been meaning to get more information about the game... The cards look pretty cool.

Personally more my style... Dates way back to May 14, 2012!

Just because something else

Just because something else did it first doesn't make it superior. Sirlin usually borrows game mechanics from other games but comes in with the approach of highly balanced, deep, and competitive games that I appreciate immensely. Few designers invest the time he does in his designs.

Why would I want a deck of Frogs?

Never said anything about it being better. That is much too subjective of a topic to discuss. You might like oranges and I prefer apples.

What I did say is that Serpent's Tongue was the FIRST game to use a Codex to store all your spells.

That's all I'm saying: "If you like Codex, you might like Serpent's Tongue."

Personally the only aspect of Serpent's Tongue I don't like is the "memorization". In order to cast spells you need to know the proper incantations. Having to memorize "bullshit" seems like a complete waist of time... I mean so you memorize their language and the spells... Is it of any use (aside from playing Serpent's Tongue)???

A lot of effort to put in just so you can be "competitive" in the game...

Gotcha. And yeah, that aspect

Gotcha. And yeah, that aspect of Serpent's Tongue seems extremely bizarre. Flavorful, yes, but a huge barrier to entry.
