Hi everyone,

I am an open university student studying a design and innovation degree.

My current assignment is to design a board game, so quite naturally I found myself washed up on these shores.

I am utterly overwhelmed at the amount of activity here and the amount of talented people sharing their expertise. I am looking forward to have a good explore round and step into a whole new world I barely knew existed.

Like most, I have had a healthy relationship with board games growing up playing with my family, then friends, and now back to with my own children.

It was not until I started studying that I have began to have a glimpse into the amount of love, sweat and tears involved behind the scenes to bring us a well tuned packet of fun.

The latest game I have bought (for research purposes of course) was Colt Express. I love it. A perfect balance of scheming, narrative, chaos and fun.

That's my introduction.

Hi

Hi Jonny,

Welcome aboard. I got my degree from the OU, so you have my great respect for going for it.

I love the idea of getting Colt Express "for research". Best rationale ever. Though actually, when you get into game design you can claim that every game purchase is research. :)

So how long have you got to do your assignment, and what are your thoughts so far?

Good luck,
Rob

Hi Rob, I've put my latest

Hi Rob,

I've put my latest prototype at http://www.bgdf.com/image/cheese-board

I won't bore you with how I've ended up at a game about cheese, but the current iteration involves a quick cat and mouse race through a very simple maze picking up time which is then used to sculpt an object in cheese (a bit like pictionary - but with cheese).

There is a scoring mechanism, and the idea is it is quite a social game, you get to eat cheese, and probably a glass of wine or two if that is your thing.

I've had various types of feed back, of which I am going to ask a question about here in the playtesing forums (to do with confirmation bias).

The overall feed back is quite positive, but there is too much unnecessary complexity, and a few things that just don't make much sense.

The silliness with the cheese seems quite popular though.

It is a four week assignment and I am just over two weeks into it. I'll keep you posted with how it is going.

Cheese!

Cheese is an awesome topic to make a game about. I should do a cheese related game. The world needs more of this sort of thing!

I guess that on a 4-week assignment without a background in game design, you can't be expected to make something that will be nominated for the Spiel des Jahres. And I imagine the point of the exercise is not really to end up with a game.

Actually, I really like the look of that prototype -- it looks exactly as it should, to my mind, for figuring out what works and what doesn't. Are you planning on working on it beyond the assessment?

After that response it would

After that response it would be rude not to work on it beyond the assessment!
