Hi all,

I just want to take a second to say what a great community of designers and creative thinkers there is here on BGDF. I have been irrationally hesitant to join/post because of paranoia about idea theft, but I got over that and here I am.

I have been designing games since I was a kid: mostly RPGs and simple roll-and-move affairs at first as well as rethemes of my favorite games, but lately I have had a renewed interest in game design and am finally taking the plunge and building up to self publishing a game in 2013 or 2014 (depending on how playtesting goes. I tend to procrastinate from projects by starting new projects so I now have 3 games in the design cue: 2 in the prototype making phase and 1 in the process of internal playtesting.

I formed Rogue Iceberg Publishing and everything is getting off the ground this year. The 3 games are:

Bog Buffet: Feast of the Blood Moon
A worker placement card game with a twist on harvesting as you control monstrous Toadies hunting down fantasy themed pigs, cows and chickens to cook them up.

Xenophobia
A traitor mechanic card game with a hidden alien infection. Stop the spread before the shuttle comes!

The Donner Party
A resource management game in the vein of Agricola, but instead of Begging when you run out of food you have...other options.

I think you shouldn't mention other games in your marketing speech when you're actually publishing it. Players might think "I already have Agricola so why buy this?" or "I didn't like Agricola so I'm not going to like this game either" and possibly end up not buying the game. Not to mention the people who would be protesting against you for "stealing Agricola's idea" or something, even when you (probably) haven't done that.

Think for yourself: When you are in a game store, and you notice that a game says it's "like Monopoly, but better!", would you buy it?

In any case, your projects sound interesting. Good luck with publishing them!

Thanks for the feedback

Thanks, that makes sense. I guess any worker placement limited resource game could be called "Agricola-like" but that is a meaningless comparison.
