Play tester's Dymino Monsters review

Tommy B game review a moment ago on FB.

Loved this game!! Not just saying that because we are friends. We did discuss possible changes and all but overall I really enjoyed the gameplay. There is sooo much possibilities in gameplays and fighting. This game after we tried a different mechanic it put me in a strategic state that I had to play a total different way. I truly had a blast. I struggled with my attacks but my defense was on point. Some of the monsters I fought and their special abilities had me running to try a different attack. I did not even get to play a full version like it was meant to be played. Jesse Fernandez just played a version to show me mechanics of how the game plays. Let me tell you now I was struggling and having a blast. The fantasy and character cards along with the story telling he gives you to play is amazing. I was running up on monsters and smacking them with my bow and laughing in their faces. Great game and I'm looking forward to playing next week to finish what I started.. unless I meet back up with another Dymino monster with an attack of 31 then I may have to rethink my actions. Again I could tell u stories of some of the monsters I encountered but I don't want to ruin all the fun for you!! Great game Jesse

Glad to hear things are moving forwards...

It's nice when people help out ... Congrats on that pleasant review! That's the ideal kind of information to post about: people liking the games that we design. Sometimes it can be hard to find or even from your own experience to get a helpful "You're doing a great job..." Which makes all the effort and trouble we put into our games.

I personally LOVE conventions. Why? Because I get to demo games to REAL people. And it can seem a bit overwhelming at first (rules and such) ... But usually by the end of the game... People are like: "Man I had FUN!" or "Where can I buy this game?"

Just the kind of positive responses that validate all the effort we put into our games. Best of luck with Dymino Monsters Jesse. Glad you found someone you could share part of your World with! Cheers.

Thank you for the kind words Kris.

I still have roughly upto 60 chapter decks and more details to Dymino Monsters to complete. In the last 16 1/2 years of development, Dymino Monsters has been playtested close to 20 times.

The high fantasy part of the game works very well and smooth and even better with the newest mechanic we implemented last night.

The only part of the game not playtested yet is the diesel punk storyline. I'm nearly finished with that by 2021 to beginning of 2022. Its been a fantastic journey to travel on to the destination.

Well done, Jesse!

Congrats on the review...that's always a great shot in the arm and can help inspire and motivate the next chapter in development. Speaking of development, was your post right...16 1/2 years? I ask because, believe it or not, a game can be over-developed as much as it can suffer from under-development. If your game has only been playtested less than two dozen times, it's not getting in front of enough people. Believe me, I understand the passion and reservations designers can have about their projects, but as someone who has worked on nearly 100 different games (Euro, military, abstract), you owe it to yourself to get Dymino Monsters in front of many other gamers in 2021.

Yes, the game has been in development for 16 1/2 years. I'm in no rush to publish the game. And I update and playtest when a new update of chapter decks have been completed to play test.

Thank you for the friendly advice to the future of my game. I still have a long way to complete the game.

It's a very large world and game, I can not a rush this story and game to fall apart. As my nephew has put it"its like coding but for tabletop".

Dymino Monsters Card Count list

Through out the development of Dymino Monsters I have several card count lists but today, I took the opportunity to write up a full new list due to the fact that I have 5 faction prototype sets to hand cut and write the text on obverse and reverse side of each card.

The listed number I'm about to share is for only the decks I have completed and playtested. The current objective I am working on the good part of the year is for the diesel punk storyline and chapter decks. I have those cards cut already from 2 years ago that are 60 cards each but that was just a standard estimate, so I wouldn't know how many cards will be included for the later decks until I get to that point.

Today, the card count list is at 8,992 for a tabletop epic fantasy novel customizable, deck building card game.

Dymino Monsters Card Count list part two

Ladies and Gentlemen after 16 1/2 years, at 4:55 am on December 27,2020 I finally caught up by cutting 8,992 prototype cards with more than half the cards are completed with front and back text. The factions the last 10 factions I have been working on since December 2020 just need text and point system.

Next up :

Food card system for all playable characters
And adding additional Moon Cards that will also have effects that affect the playmat.

Just curious!

Hello Jesse,
glad to see you're working hard and going forward with your project!
I read your update and few things made me curious :)
What do you mean with point 10? Are you doing movie scripts for your game?? You mean to pitch to directors?

Something that buffles me a bit is the "need" of having 2500 encounters in the game, I would prefer having 100 awesome encounters than 200 not perfectly balanced and entertaining...2500 seems like a really high number. Even big productions with dozens of people fail to deliver consistent quality when trying to get huge decks.
I got the idea that you are trying to do something very ambitious and that is very cool, but maybe you could release the game in different chapters, so that you can balance the new ones based on feedback from a whoever buys the first ones? Anyway a game as big as yours would be too expensive to buy in one go I guess :)

Here are my answers:

Q1: Movie scripts?

A1: No, I wont be pitching directors for my franchise. I write these stories to push the envelope of my creativity. I enjoy writing and hopefully in the future I will have finances to direct these projects. And Why not? I have the creative skills to write 5 production scripts. I've already wrote the first one based on the first 6 1/2 chapters of the first novel. Which became 96 pages.

Q2: The "Need of 2,500 encounters?"

A2: Yes. As large as the story and game, the game requires large scale of encounters for the large world / story to interact with. 100 or 200 monster cards is not enough. In the beginning, 2004 there were and are 28 original cards. But when I shuffled and played the primitive deck of cards at that count, the cards began to sort itself out. Plus, I felt the game needed more than just 28. Nothing wrong with the 28, it felt bland.

I wanted to have more cards for different categories. The core deck has 80 encounters. The first expansion has 100 new encounters. The second expansion has 102 encounters.

In 2012, the genre and theme started to take shape for the game. Even though I had monster lists from previous years, 80 of those names didn't fit the story. Or the story the cards were trying to fit into.

2012 the game was high fantasy and steampunk. 2014-2015 New monster/creature lists were written to fit the genre and theme. The game then was high fantasy, steampunk and diesel punk. Adding new material to the game and story required new encounters.

For Balancing the Game after each chapter deck (expansion deck).

I balanced the game by using the dominoes set numbers. Double 6, double 9 and double 12. The core deck and its chapter decks (expansion decks) use the double 6 domino set.

How can this game be balanced?
Easily by adding +2, +4, +6, +8 on the character card and on the monster card as both groups use during attack and defense phase. Then with that system, I can easily use the domino set. In the double six set, all 8 tiles that have 6 on them add up to 48. But for combat and defense , each character and encounter only use 4 tiles from their 4 high 7 across tile (bone) stack.

If you look at a domino tile
There are numbers or pips (dots on both sides of a black line.

When you flip over the tile, the piys that are above the line is your attack points. The pips below the black line (closest to your chest) is the defense points for your character.

Basic addition. Encounter cards have add or negative point system for 1 or all 4 tiles to make a higher attack or higher defense. If the same number for player and encounter happens; it negates itself and all tiles goes to the discard pile. The player or monster can now counter attack.

This goes very well with the double 9 and double 12 dominoes sets. This is how I can manage a balance point system. Encounter cards also have abilities (flavor text) that really challenges the player / group of players. Yes, I am ambitious to strive to finish on what I love to do. Write, tell stories, being passionate with my creativity.

How do I balance higher Encounter numbers? It all deals with how many players are in play, the domino sets being used and the affect from text. The only thing I had to edit were the Titan cards for their point system. My group and i were doing great with the Titans on the field, some battles were completed after 4 battle rounds due to the faction units they were fighting with. And the Titans were not Titan enough so I bumped the point system from say for example 4,200 attack to 42,000 attack. For defense system for encounters and Titans etc, I just divided the numbers to get a defense system. This is why I can keep adding to the list but also remove material that doesn't fit and how many cards per chapter (expansion) deck is needed. Card counting per deck tells a story in itself. My lowest deck has 9. Its the Thieves of Alahar. A floater deck that pops up every now and again during the story and game play.

Selling the Product:

Option 1: Core and expansions for all novel sets separately. There are no commons,rares, ultra rare, super rare etc in Dymino Monsters. It wasn't needed. Game includes rules, play mats (5), chapter booklets.

Option 2: Core with 25 chapter decks in same box per novel set. Extras : See option 1.

3: Character Encyclopedia, Monster Encyclopedia, World Map, Constellation Encyclopedia all sold separately.

And in the very beginning of this thread page 2 or 3 , I have mentioned, "I'm not worried if this game sells or not. I know that it was well worth it"

I have also thinking doing a limited run of 5,000 games and be done. We will see.

just to make it clear I never questioned why you are doing it, it's very clear you are passionate about it and love the process (and it's the same for me, sometimes I can't sleep thinking of my game!)...and I totally get that you want to create a universe as rich as you imagine it!

Here's what's happening this month

Just wrote 12 Constellation stories/notes. I have 75 left to write. Should be done within the next hour or so. This will be another huge accomplishment for me and my game. All of these Constellations have tons of clues within the notes.

I have 43 left to complete the book.

Constellation Encyclopedia

At 1:18 PM today on 1/15/2021 I have completed the Constellation Encyclopedia booklet. It took longer than I thought. But it was well worth it. I was awake till this morning at 5:30ish am and I had 10 pages to fill out. I took a 2 hour nap, then it took me 2 hours from 11:30 am to 1:18 to complete.

It took me at total of 4 days to add backstories and other details to all 89 Constellations.

I will be putting up an update and video of the work later this evening on Facebook at Dymino Monsters/Triidorium page.

UPDATE---------

After 4 hours trying to upload a 9 minute and 40 second video to Facebook this early morning from 1am to 4 am, I decided it was not worth the time to upload any more pre-recorded videos. It's a shame, but whatever. I will put up photos on my Dymino Monsters/Triidorium page but not here on bgdf anymore because of photo size to upload. I'm not a tech savvy person so, I can only do whatever the technology allows me to do.

So, if any one is still interested in updates of photos for Dymino Monsters, check out the page there.

Food system cards:

I have decided to take four food cards out for each playable character.

Each set had 16 cards, it's now down to 12.

Why, mathematically designed from 2,4,6,8 health gem replenishment. The point system also coincides with the weapon skill technique cards.

Also, the cut back helps maintain card cost.

Brand New Update;

I had completed all 24 player food card point system this morning at 5:42 am. I stayed up till 7 am watching Galaxy Quest and eating my Solo dinner left overs from 10 PM last night. It was oh so good.

Spaghetti noodles
White corn canned
Peas canned
Mixed vegetables canned
Green beans canned
3 small onions chopped and partially sauteed.
Noodles after boiled to the right temperature of not over cooking I used some vegetable oil and added it to the pan and let that warm up.
Then took the vegetable medley and added 3/4 of the mixture to the noodles and added a drizzle of soy sauce. It's nothing new of a recipe, but the meal was so light, fluffy and tender cooked. It was delightful, to drink was gallon water jug. Man, can I cook. Yes I do toot my own horn. Hehe.
Before going to bed this morning, I read Nehemiah chapters 4,5,6, of the Bible.

For the food cards system, the only thing that's left to do is the prototype artwork and the reverse card text for each card. I'll show a picture of the current task I'm working on later this afternoon.

Then to work on the new factions point system. I already have an idea what the point system will look like in mind since 3 weeks ago before writing everything down. Next task will be coming up with all of the General names for each factions for their units.

Next after that or in between these 2 tasks is to come up with the last 1,250 monster encounters to finish up the 2,500 monster Encyclopedia list.

Then write up the chapter deck stories and then work on all of the world play mats.

Then to get everything typed up on digital format and I will be finally completed with this game. Coming up April 24, 2021 will be 17 years in the making of Dymino Monsters.

A dream coming true to see the end of this epic journey to get to the destination. Wow, what an adventure.

Dymino Monsters: Food System

I have completed the next 11 food systems.

The 12 food card system includes the playable character sets from Princess Katalia to the Geologist with no name as of yet. This set of playable characters goes to the diesel punk storyline.

Now later tonight to work on the Dymino Monsters: Food System character set for Dymino to Nightingale. That is another 12 characters to work on and I'll be complete for this small task.

There are 24 playable characters in Dymino Monsters.

Dymino Monsters Food Card Set

Dymino through Nightingale's Food card System is completed. I took two sets away because Kre-8 and Nightingale are mechanical playable characters that do not need to eat.

I started at 1:10 PM 1/19/2021

I am so proud of my self to move onto the next objective in this game project.

D.M. Update

Dymino Monsters: Diesel Punk Faction Point System confirmed and configured this morning.

Now to just write the text for these cards to get the second part of this objective completed.

Next objectives to accomplish:

1: 1,083 new monster / creature list.
2: 112 General Faction cards.
3: More Play mats to draw and hand color.

It's time, time, time to showcase tonight's brand new Update for Dymino Monsters:

Dymino Monsters updates from January 26, 2021 through March 2, 2021

1: Jan 26, 2021

I removed the Archers, battle standards and Warrior units from Flowers of the North.

2: Downsized All engineer cards for all diesel punk factions from thirty cards to 6 - 17 cards each faction size due to management of Kingdoms and Empires.

3: Flowers of the North is a Neutral faction. I did however keep elite guards, engineers, sailors, soldiers units.

4: Jan 27, 2021 With the downsizing of the engineer units across all factions (diesel punk) the total count of cards were 8,999 to 8,048. Then re-added both weapon skill technique sets which brought up the total count of cards so far as 9,488.

5: There are so far as 9 chapter decks for the diesel punk storyline not including the faction sets.

6: Jan 29 2021:
I've decided to remove the faction general sets for the diesel punk chapter decks.

7: on Jan 22, 2021
I have revised the prototype text contents to a short version text that allows me to get the prototype cards completed faster and will be used on the final cards.

8: February 2, 2021
I edited the 20 upcoming chapter deck encounter list. Originally the 20 upcoming chapter decks felt comfortable of having a deck , but the more I thought about it, it seemed more obvious to shorten the list of encounters. This also looks more of a better choice to go with the gut emotion / feeling due to the story and telling / showing the story and not force or over feed the boundaries of thought process. The 20 chapter decks that were edited now have lists of total from the lowest of 25 encounter cards to the highest encounter list of 60 encounter cards .

9: February 7 2021 7 PM to 7:10 PM.
With the 158 Triidorium locations on the list, I finally made , edited what is now a very probable outline for the narrative progressive path from start to finish, but now I will work on a path tree for locations and all other details of objectives players will work towards to the conclusion of the Dymino Monsters story.

There are 92 story paths so far.

Wrote 22 new encounters out of 741.
674 names left to be filled out on the list of monster Encyclopedia.

Wrote 47 new encounters out of 741. 627 names left to be filled on the list.

Allocated the 35 Toy Master works on the list and the World Map Locations.

14: Story Path , character path. And connections outline started on February 13, 2021 and completed on February 13, 2021.

15: The Astrologer and Geologist names for playable characters has been finalized on February 13, 2021.

16: Toy Master Works throughout Triidorium has been laid out on the list February 13, 2021.

22: February 20, 2021 Removed 16 engineer cards from Warriors of Osconia faction. It now has 14 cards. 100 - 5,000 engineers.

The Four Player Battle mat has a new game play variant: Capture the Flag.

Completed the entire diesel punk faction text for the point system finalization.

The list is some what in an numeric format order but also isn't, but the main purpose of this list is the very core of the players/characters objectives to complete.

Now to take this list and edit it for the 24 characters that are playable in the story.

Each character has 64 objectives to complete, but I think I can edit it down to half that then add sub objectives for each playable character lists.

Brand New Update

I written 9 new monster encounters to fill in some older decks. Air, Lightning, Neo Mutant, fire.

4 new air encounters
6 new fire encounters
3 new neo mutant encounters
3 lightning encounters out of 5.

There are no attributes yet, but it does feels great to fill the 10 count for these core categories for these decks.

Here's what's happening this month

You all may or may not hear from me in a great while. I am the head cook at our family pizza shop now. So, when I get a chance, I will let you all know when the next update will be. If by chance you guys and gals dont hear from me,this is why I'm not around as much. But, I do wanna say a few things.

1: Thank you everyone for taking the time follow this bgdf post and on my Facebook account. I'm not leaving, just very busy.

2: I am so glad to have gotten this far on my Dymino Monsters project after 17 years coming up on April 24, 2021. We'll get there.
