Unicorns Friend or Foe

Unicorns are crazy popular right now! Some people are off the walls about them while others wish that the walls would keep the unicorns and their crazed fans out. It is time to declare your alliance. Are the unicorns “Oh, so fluffy!” or “Oh my gosh, annoying.”
Unicorns friend or foe is a card collecting concept divided into two games.

If playing the Foe addition then you will use fierce characters like, cyclops, centaurs, and dragons to slaughter unicorns. These characters will need to be armed with the most outrageous and menacing weapons you can create. Only when one of the characters wields one of these weapons will they be able to go forth and slaughter.

If playing the Friend addition then you will use cute and cuddly characters like, gnomes, pixies, or a teacup dragon to befriend the cherished unicorns. These characters will need to offer the most elaborate and fancy gifts you can create. Only when one of the characters offers one of those gifts will they be able to make many friends.

Don’t worry for all those whose opinions are neutral on unicorns, tipping the scale neither in favor or against. Feel free to combine both games where your options stay open to kill or not to kill.

How it works
-5 unicorns will be placed in the center of the field to start. Each unicorn will have a value the needs to be reached or exceeded in order to kill or befriend
-A player will need to have a Character and a weapon in hand along with descriptors to bolster the appeal of the gift/character or bolster the attack of the weapon/character
-A player can kill up to three unicorns a turn depending upon how high they can raise that value

Have fun turning a gnome with a frosted donut into a tiny cuddly gnome with a delicious frosted donut
or
a Pegasus with a candlestick into a Big A*s Pegasus wielding an epic flaming explosive candlestick

Does this sound like a good idea for a game? Just hoping for some feedback

Are the friend and foe sides

Are the friend and foe sides basically identical? Like, if I take a foe deck and replace the word "kill" with "cuddle" and "flaming sword" with "shiny necklace", and so on, do I get the friend deck?

I'm not really sure I "get" the whole game, but I'm not sure how you'd play a deck with both things in it and have a chance to win against a focused deck.

Hmm... Not sure about that

See the problem I see is that "girls" may want to BOTH play the sides of "be-friending" Unicorns. And their "brothers" may want to play the opposite side and slaughter a bunch of "-corns" to steal their "horns"!

So your best possibility in my opinion is to make the game playable with multiple players playing the "nice" side and also have the possibility to include a couple "nasty" players to the mix.

So maybe make the game from 2 to 4 players (2 of each side).

Just some food for thought... Cheers!

Note: So the idea is that two (2) friends can each play the SAME side and try to be-friend the unicorns. But a couple of brothers can be added to the mix and then they could play a four (4) person game with 2 people be-friending and 2 people destroying! LOL

So the idea is if you have both copies you can add them together cause they play the same. Then you could choice whether or not you want to befriend them or if you want to kill them.

Then lets say you draw a gift that is intended to befriend and has a friendly value of 6 you could use that gift to befriend the unicorn or you could add enough destructive adjectives from the foe edition to turn that gift into a weapon. So lets say it is an ice cream cone, you could turn it into a poisoned bloody ice cream cone. Now it is a weapon and can kill the unicorn

But I like the idea of it becoming kind of a co-op whichever team wins concept thanks!

Yeah the games are pretty similar, just kind of switch themes of what things are called like you said. flaming sword would turn into shiny necklace.

The concept of the game is along the lines of a faster party game like exploding kittens, so you aren't pitting the decks against each other but rather choosing the edition you would rather play. Younger family might want to befriend where as others would like to kill.
To win
-First to kill/befriend 7 different colored unicorns. The colors of the rainbow R-O-Y-G-B-I-V
or
-First person to kill/befriend 5 unicorns of the same color

Then you can add the two decks together so that players can choose which they would rather do.

2 vs. 2 or CO-OP 3 vs. 1

Hmm... I think I have something similar in terms of "experience". You can correct me if I am wrong.

So my understanding is that you plan to market decks separately? Meaning you can either buy "Be-friend" or "Defeat" decks "separately". Is this correct??

If YES, it is sort of reminding me about my earlier version of "TradeWorlds" where each player needed their OWN "Game Set".

Anyways the concept didn't really go very far UNTIL I partnered with Outer Limit Games and we decided that what the MARKET would want is one "Big Box" for four (4) players.

And so that's the direction we went in and got almost 1,000 backers.

Seems like people (think gamers) are expecting four (4) player boxes as opposed to individual or personal sets. So if your game ALLOWS up to four (4) players, it would be best to make a "Big Box" for four (4) players and based on what you are telling me, I would see this as 2 "Be-Friend" and 2 "Destroy".

Alternatively you could do 3 "Be-Friend" and 1 "Destroy" and make it somehow CO-OP where the three (3) trying to be-friend have to find a way to defeat the opposing party who wants to "destroy" all the unicorns.

Again just some experience and other ideas for you.

Cheers.

Loving the possibility of 2v2 and 3v1

I was thinking each game would be a four player game. where players try to be the first to befriend 7 unicorns or kill seven. Then if you had the other edition that it could be played up to 8 players, where some could befriend and some could kill.

I am seriously digging this idea of somehow it becomes a co-op game when the editions are combined!

I am not ignoring the advice of having it start as one game as opposed to two. We were thinking that the benefit of two would be that we could have a more polite version for younger ages in the befriend edition and a more suggestive set of descriptors for the foe, nothing to crazy but like big a** or well-endowed

In terms of "interesting" game concept...

I personally would have chosen "3 Be-Friend vs. 1 Destroy" CO-OP game.

To my this would have the most "punch" in terms of a game! The trick is making sure the game is BALANCED when it's 1 vs. 1 or 2 vs. 1 and lastly 3 vs. 1...

But in terms of the IDEA... I say the "CO-OP" vision of the game would probably be the most enticing idea.

I could really picture a game like this working! Anyway it's your game. you can do what you feel is best. But my opinion is that a CO-OP play type of game with Unicorns sounds like something INTERESTING (to me)!

Cheers...

It's a great Idea

Yeah it sounds really interesting to me as well! Really is getting my brain flowing picturing the three people who really wanna save the unicorns and that one who is just bent on destruction!

I will have to sit down and think and process it all.

I love the feedback, thank you!

You need to ADD miniatures

If you want a BLOWOUT "concept", well you should do like "My Little Ponies" and create different "Unicorn" Characters and create MINIATURES of them...

Man that would be TOTALLY AWESOME! And the one (1) ENEMY bent on destruction could be Orcs (all kinds like a Shaman, Warriors, etc.)

Make that and everyone would go CRAZY over that game!

Like you said: "People either LOVE or HATE Unicorns"... With a CO-OP game of be-friending and one (1) player plotting the total and complete destruction of the Unicorns ... WITH MINIATURES ... Would SELL like CRAZY and people would go totally nuts for all kinds of "Magical Unicorns".

Just some more to think about... Could be a REAL "HOT" game for girls and their dad or brother! (Playing the nasties/baddies again her and her friends...)

Just look at "My Little Pony"... That was a smoking success! I can fully imagine "Magical Unicorns" make an even BIGGER mark! You've definitely got a concept to ponder about...

Cheers!

And it's a different TAKE on things

I've never seen a TableTop game that is about "Unicorns". But I agree that it's a very NOVEL concept. And I've been seeing all these "games" that are all about pure agression (like HATE for example). All kinds of miniature games about Greek and Roman Gods, etc.

But... miniature "Unicorns" ... That would be SO ORIGINAL!

You don't even need it to by a MINIS game... Just as an Pledge UPGRADE to a premium version with the minis... Or maybe the "core" game — IDK.

All I think minis would be AWESOME addition! Cheers...
