I can't believe that I got a $300+ ticket for going over a solid Yellow Line when maneuvering into the left-most turn lane (turning Left). What total and complete BS this was. The ticket's infraction states and I quote:

being the driver of a road vehicle and having crossed a solid single line marking off the lanes

I'm going back there to take multiple pictures from various angles. As far as how I was taught to drive, it is permissible to cross over into the other lane when there is either a dotted or single solid Yellow Line. In the case of a solid line, you must ensure you can do the maneuver safely and in my case I was coming to a light and had already slowed down below 50 km/hr.

There was no on-coming traffic and there was a TURNING LANE to the left which I was going into (and there were no other cars in that lane).

What complete and total BS. Plus I got 3 demerit points because of the "so-called infraction". Ya, right... And Pigs can fly... (Pun not intended)

I can't believe the "strange" laws...

Well it looks like the Driver's Code in Quebec PROHIBITS passing ANYTHING but a Bicycle when it comes to a Solid Yellow Line. Clearly it was a TRAP for the cop. Because when I look at my maneuver there was nothing dangerous about it... It's not like my car went into on-going traffic because there was a Left Turn at the lights that I was stopping for.

Anyhow ... It seems like I broke the law by crossing the Solid Yellow Line. I've Googled and have seen laws like: "If you cross a Solid Yellow Line, you may do so if the maneuver is SAFE." And TBH that's what I've always thought the road code was...

Guess I was WRONG! And the cop right. It's still ridiculous $300+!!! Maybe $50+ would be acceptable. So not funny...

That's a bummer, man. Sorry to hear you're stuck with a few hundred dollars to pay off.

Unfortunately...

I was in the car alone and did not have a passenger. This makes it very difficult to contest the ticket ... because it's my word vs. the officer. And who do you think the court will believe? Especially if the Law says no crossing Yellow Lines. Really this is NEWS to me, because usually people PASS a car that is trying to parallel park and you have to go over the Yellow Line to do this.

So really, I thought the only exception to the rule was: "If the maneuver can be done SAFELY without any type of collision from on-coming traffic". But it looks like in my neck of the woods, it is hardly ever legal only in the event that you may be passing a bicyclist.

Who knows ... maybe the cops are up to their old-tricks again... Nailing pretty much innocent drivers. She could have given me a WARNING ... My driving record was SPOTLESS! (No tickets for like over 10 years) So I'm a bit shocked!!!

3 Freaken demerit points too... That's going to increase my registration and cost of renewing my driver's license too! The "gift" that keeps giving...

Given that you actually did

Given that you actually did it, yeah, not much of a defense available to you. Having someone else in the car wouldn't help, because there's a certain presumption that your buddy (or girlfriend, etc.) will back up your story whether or not it's true.

Does seem like a good case for giving a warning, but again, nothing you can really do seeing as how you DID cross a solid line.

Well ... IF the copper was WAITING there...

It was some kind of TRAP! Like waiting until SOME car comes and drives over the Solid Yellow Line just because it's TWO (2) Lanes one for going straight and the other an Advanced Turn LEFT... Is VERY suspicious.

I don't care if it's a driving code infraction. People drive straight through RED LIGHTS (And I saw one of them TODAY!) Do they get a ticket for going RIGHT THROUGH A RED??? No.

I get suckered into some stupid copper trap where the lane to turn LEFT is just a bit ahead of me and the lane I was in had several cars waiting for the light to change (even though it was my intention to TURN LEFT!)

I'm going back there to have a good look at the area. I'll be taking pictures and see what the cop SAW and what actually happened. Just for my own peace of mind!
