Hey everybody,

I'm new on the forum and you can call me Xay. I live in a small town in the Netherlands with my husband and I work as a nanny. We are huge fans of boardgames, I think we own around 300 games. We love to watch Tom Vasel and one of our favorite holidays is 4 days of visiting Spiel in Essen (although this year I am afraid there will be no Spiel - sad face).

The last few months I've been making my own games. It started as a project with some of the children I work with. While they were very excited with a simple dice game (roll and walk) we made in one afternoon, in which we collected animals, I wanted something more and started to develop my idea (about an ant on an adventure) a little further.

Right now I am faced with the problem that the first player has an advantage which makes the game unbalanced. As in: there are things you can/must collect on the board, and the first one on that space can take it. Which is, by far, almost always the player who begins the game and is up front. I’m not sure how to deal with this ‘first player advantage’ yet. Work in progress.

Besides the ant-game, I also made an easy “roll and write” (very Corona-proof) in which you collect ingredients and bake recipes for points. That’s also still under construction because it was boring when we played it. I made some changes and the second run was a bit better, but still not ready.

I am looking forward to reading about game design on this forum and maybe talk along with you all. As said, I am not a professional designer (my husband cringes as I made a score-sheet in Word with tables) and I am not trying to get my game official developed (although in the future a booth at Spiel would be awesome! A girl can dream, right?). I’m just having fun in my free time.

Lots of love,
Xayiede

Glad you are here, welcome!

Glad you are here, welcome!

After playing so many games I feel it is pretty natural to contribute to them.

As an alternate to roll and move, many games have done a mechanic where the player in back takes the next turn, and they can move however far they want, but the farther ahead they go for that one valuable thing, the more things they pass up, and allow the other players access to.

Good luck and don't be affraid to post more questions, or details about your game.

Only you can make your game, and without you, the world may never get to enjoy it.

Hello and welcome

Xay, it sounds like we're at the same level. Instead of Spiel, I want a booth at Origins someday. Maybe when my kids are a bit older. I look forward to learning more about your games.

Thanks!

Thanks for the 'welcomes', I've been reading a lot on the forum lately and it is all so interesting.

Yes, it is... :P We store them in big Ikea Kallax cupboards (those with all the cube sized units) which signatures our livingroom.

Yeah, I think that is exactly how I feel!

Good idea, we enjoy Patchwork with that mechanic and also Via Straciatella (I think it is called Rocky Road ala Mode in the US), which we played this weekend because you reminded me. :)
Unfortunetly, my game is kinda a race, the one who gets closest to the end gets the most points, so this will not work.

I will make a topic in which I explain my game and maybe we can brainstorm a bit more.

I didn't know that gamefair existed but it looks just like Spiel so I think it will be much fun! But I'm sorry to read on the website they had to cancel it. Just like Spiel, who also got cancelled due to Corona. Already looking forward to next year.
