I decided to scavenge the few other complete games I had on my hard drive, and decided to publish it to add visibility on the game platform.

This one is a school project I made in Java that implements Virus and Ataxx including the AI ... that always beats me. Here are the links to download the files:

https://gamejolt.com/games/virus-ataxx/1097163

https://lariennalibrary.itch.io/virus-ataxx

I particularly like the graphics I made for the title. I strictly used Inkscape.

I have a 3rd game I will try to scavenge which have been made with bitsy, but I have to translate and change all the text in the game. So it will take a while.

Enjoy!

I've never heard of Virus or Attaxx, but the rules on itch make it sound cool

Thanks. Its an old classic

Thanks. Its an old classic game, I stumble on Virus in a game book. I tried to get the date, but I could not find it. Ataxx was released in 1988 and was probably inspired on virus.

I just released my new 3D maze crawler engine demo on the same platforms. Originally, I did not want to post it here since its not a board game. Here are the links anyway, you can find it on the same platforms:

https://lariennalibrary.itch.io/mapper-maze-crawler-engine

https://gamejolt.com/games/mapper/1101252

I have a road map, with multiple path available. I can either develop more engine feature, or work on my financial 18xx like game. I'll see how things evolves.

Another publication, my Bitsy

Another publication, my Bitsy school project that I converted.

I should now be out of projects I can quickly release. The next ones will require more work.

Whoa I'm jealous... !!!

That looks like an AMAZING game @larienne. You saved the BEST for LAST!!! Congratulations. Yeah that looks like an "ATARI" Game... But you need to share with us the "BUTTON" you press to ACTIVATE?!?! I mean there is movement (Joystick) but there is a BUTTON too (on the ATARI Joystick)!

So maybe you should add the SPACEBAR or something like that???

Just wondering??? Is there a BUTTON KEY or not?!?!

AMAZING effort put into this game. Not to say that the OTHER games were not as interesting... But this one ... Takes the CAKE (so-to-speak).

Again congratulations. Oh yeah, Engineering got back to me today. It was the Shipping Price point at $21,474,836.47 that was causing the problem. Support suggested that I lower it down to $999.00 USD and hopefully that should be OKAY?!

Regards.

I tried playing but...

I found the Jewel of Nightmares and LOST the game. I found both the Silver and Golden Key, I found the both Moon and Sun Medallions and when I make my way to the Jewel, I get the wrong one.

That PUZZLE is beyond me. IDK what I could do differently... In any event, I don't know what I did WRONG...? Maybe you could HELP with a clue or some kind of specific information that I did NOT have???

It's cool. I think I'm 90% done with the PUZZLES... But missing the LAST one.

TBH ... I don't know what I need to do differently???

Cheers.

Note #1: It said in the LAST ROOM: "Now that you read every sign, you know the fate that awaits you..." (Or something like that).

Is it possible to get a DIFFERENT outcome based on which signs you READ and DO NOT READ??? Just curious ...

And great job on the puzzles and hidden passageway ... Figured it had to be SOMETHING like that. Found it. But still not sure about the GEM...

The Gem is cursed, that is

The Gem is cursed, that is the catch. Getting the gem and the collection quest is the most you can do.

I am surprised that my atari style game is the best game. Who would have thought!

It uses an engine called bitsy where the editor runs in a web browser. If you want to make a story based video game and you have no programming skills, this is an engine that can do the job. Everything web based makes it even more convenient.

The only keys availables are arrows and enter for text. There is no other keys. Again, very simple engine.

Ahh .. I see... So that's the "outcome" no matter what!

I think your Mapper "engine" and sample is probably the MOST ADVANCED Game that you have shown us. But there is little "excitement" in just a MAP where nothing happens. You virus swing game is COOL ... But I'm not really into abstract games... Like Chess, Checkers, Backgammon, Go, Mahjong, etc. etc. So that's why I think it's COOL (the virus game) ... But this one does feel like an ATARI game for sure. It reminds me of a Cross between "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "E.T.".

It's more like E.T. because you move around from room to room. In E.T. it's from one area to the next. And the whole Indiana Jones aspect with the traps... And all, it was FUN. I enjoyed it. I probably played it about a DOZEN times before getting the Gem. But I was perplexed by the RESULT.

If it had been crossed with "SwordQuest" (Another ATARI Title) then you could have an Inventory and you need to place items in rooms to unlock the puzzle. Like placing the Moon Medallion on the center round piece on the Left-Hand-Side and the Sun Medallion on the center round piece on the RHS...

If you have the WHIP ... You can get into a room where there are SNAKES forever crawling from out of the holes in the room... Tougher to implement.

Just having a bit of FUN thinking about all the NEAT stuff you can add. Of course I realize it's a completed Design.

Like I said... For ME, it was the BEST game you have shown us. Because I've beaten the Raiders of the Ark ATARI game and also the E.T. ATARI game too. SwordQuest ... I could never figure out... But it HAD an Inventory and you could drop ITEMS in rooms.

But it's still cool what you've managed to make. I yeah I saw that the room with the Silver Key shows the passage to the Puzzle of the floor below it for how to collect the Moon Medallion... Smart. I noticed that too.

Check out "Raiders of the Lost Ark" for ATARI or "E.T." for ATARI or even "SwordQuest" for ATARI... Those cartridges can provide you with similar experience and maybe add to the possibilities (in your own mind if you ever want to design something else...) I know "The Temple of Death" is a completed design ... But you could have Version 2.0: "The Pharoah's Curse" Hahahaha!!!

You can ADD an Inventory: Enter button allows you to OPEN the Inventory. The Spacebar allows you to DROP an item at you current position. Use arrows, L-R-U-D to move around in the Inventory. Enter button allows you to CLOSE the Inventory without dropping an item...

Some items you need to USE/DROP in front of the place: like Drop a Silver Key in-front of the Door that requires the Silver Key... And that USES it (and permanently removes it from your Inventory... etc. etc.

But YEAH I think that the game had me for a whole HOUR. Figuring out WHERE not to go! Hehehe. Once I got the hang of it... I wasn't sure about the Gem. So I asked and you say that the Gem IS Cursed. Hahaha. Ok... I just thought it was because I had done something WRONG!

Cheers @larienna... You've done some cool stuff... Congrats and becoming more experienced with Video Game Design AND Coding!

Kind regards.

Its an adventure game, so

Its an adventure game, so there could be other adventures. I guess I could create bigger maps, originally, I was aiming for a 5x5x2 map, but realized it would take too much time. So I aimed for 3x3x2

I am glad you were addicted by my game, it proves I can design games right. Did you notice that the center room, the floor tiles is actually a copy of the temple's map?

Unfortunately Bitsy does not allow you to see your inventory. When you get an item, there is an internal variable that gets incremented. Then other game objects can interact with those variables. So if var >= 1 do X else do Y. So doors and plates are game objects you can interact with. So I had to make a game with the restrictions I had. This is why its more a story oriented game engine.

Now there is another engine called Bipsy, which has more features including 16x16 sprites, Multilayered drawings, inventory panel, better color palettes with transparency. Etc.

I guess I could use the Legend of zelda remake: Zelda Classic, or ZQuest, change the sprites, and make it an indiana jones adventure game.

Else, I would need to use my own engine when ready. But I might proceed differently. Maybe make a strategy game where you manage resources for expeditions, then when you launch an expedition, you get into some kind of tile game like Dungeon quest.

There is already a video game on steam with a similar theme called "Renowned Explorers: International Society". I own the game, I did not have the chance to play much. It looks OK.

Hmm... I know you used Bitsy for TOD...

But maybe you should look into VCS:

https://gamefromscratch.com/vcs-game-maker-atari-2600-game-engine/

How to make REAL ATARI 2600 Games. I'm just saying ... It might be COOLER and more POPULAR "releasing a ROM" for YOUR NEXT Game.

There is a COOL VIDEO on that website which you can WATCH too.

I looked at Bipsi and it's not much different than Bitsy TBH. But VCS Game Maker looks pretty cool too. If you WANT to make an ATARI 2600 Game... Why not create a ROM using a Game Engine that creates ATARI 2600 ROMs.

Anyhow... Just SHARING with you what I FOUND. I will be watching the REST of that Video about VCS Game Maker... Because it's a COOL ROM compatible engine.

Cheers.

Note #1: This is the ACTUAL VCS Maker Link to the Engine.

https://haroldo-ok.itch.io/vcs-game-maker

I did not try it... Just reading the comments and such. Looking for a Manual next... Hehehe.

Note #2: As a REAL ATARI 2600 Engine movement can be more fluid you move around in terms of units ... Not blocky movement like Bitsy...

I'm just saying... Maybe it's cool with the 6 Gen Language (Visual Coding). You make me interested in this stuff... The only thing that I can remember was the ATARI could play BEEP-Music (beep-beep-beep-tada, beep-beep... bum).

Anyhow ... Just saying. I would definitely look into this ... For pure FUN TBH... I guess I have extra time.

Please SHARE with my YOUR thoughts!!!

Note #3: Yeah it's definitely MORE complicated making an ATARI 2600 Game ROM than the Bitsy Game Engine. Yes I know you need to learn how the engine works... But the VCS Engine is probably more complicated... Since you need to check for COLLISIONS yourself. Yeah movement is SMOOTHER. But you need to work with the Animations if you want to make a MOVEMENT-LIKE walk of your character...

I played with it a bit... And I'm not sure about the WHOLE Animated character. In most ATARI 2600 Games I've played... The animation occurs when YOU MOVE not when you are STANDING STILL... Hmm... That's an interesting FACT!

VCS Game Maker is VERY complicated and...

Requires WAY TOO MUCH configuration. What I mean is the blocks forming the shape around the board are very restrictive and the backgrounds are VERY primitive too.

Hah! Difficult tool it is...

You can set multi-colored Sprites (In a very specific way...) which can be cool. IDK how to have NON-MOVING Sprites in the game. Which means that it's lousy not being able to ADD more sprites to a Room.

Hehehe.

Update #1: This VCS Game Maker is HARD to use. And doesn't support much in terms of sprites... I can't even figure out HOW(?) to put a Sprite that is neither Player 1 or Player 2... WTF???

Update #2: I gave up that on that sh!t... Too primitive. Sorry to say ... Your Bitsy engine is MORE powerful than the ATARI VCS Maker. Stay away from that Engine because it's TOO PRIMITIVE!

For what it's WORTH...

Here's what I've got done until NOW...

VCS Testing Source Code

It's cool and I did manage to swap out the animations to allow some motion. I know it's not perfect... But not too bad.

The Backgrounds are PRIMITIVE... So much work needs to be put into that engine and ensure ATARI 2600 Compatibility.

Feel free to D/L my project file and TRY it to see what I've played around with.

Sincerely.

Important: Right-Click on the Link and do "Save link as..." Otherwise it will show you the SOURCE FILE used by the project.

Note #1: You can't do much but play around with ONE screen. The Background suck, you can't have multiple Sprites (non-animated), you can only have 2 Animated Sprites ON-SCREEN... Yes you can define MORE... But you have no way of displaying them like "Variables"... Lots of work to be done on this engine for sure.

Note #2: I think that ATM this VCS Game Maker Engine is the START of something cool... But it CANNOT Be used to make games. Unless the game is PONG or something similar... The additional Sprites vs. Animation issue is big because even in "Asteroid" there are do many asteroids moving around the area of play again NOT supported by this ONE SCREEN Engine... It's more a PROOF-OF-CONCEPT ATM. And has a lot of work and effort (blood, sweat and tears) to get it to becoming a full fledge ATARI 2600 Game Maker!

About your Mapper Maze preview...

I just wanted to share what I did with ChatGPT concerning your "Mapper Maze". What I did was take a "Screenshot" and ask OpenAI to ask it to render the scene with better lighting and more textures...

And this is what it came out with:

Looks pretty cool what could be possible. This is just an example. I'm seeing this is what could be made in modern environments with 3D composition and lighting source for each torch, etc. etc.

Anyhow... Just wanted to show you how COOL your Mapper Game could become. I honestly don't know how you could make this other than use Unreal or Unity TBH.

Just saying. Best!
