Best option to illustrate a damaged unit token....

Hello reader

I want to discuss what token suits you best when a unit is damaged... the token size is about 4 centimeters wide... any additional suggestions are welcome.... thx!

I think it is better to put

I think it is better to put the blood on the soldier/hero instead. If.. it isn't to much trouble.

Of those options I would pick

Of those options I would pick the first (blood-splat in the background) though I think it would be better if it were in the foreground with some transparency.

I agree with Never that a

I agree with Never that a blood splat will be more noticeable and superimposed over the image with some transparency. Subtle details like the bloody grass could be easily overlooked.

Is alternative art an option?

I.e. show soldiers acting as wounded (plus the blood splatter).

Sorry to spoil the fun, but

Sorry to spoil the fun, but that is very color blind unfriendly.

Most game use white bar in the background or around the edge (think white bar) to show that this unit is wounded. You could even remove the color and only use grey scale in addition to the white bars above to indicate wounded unit.

The blood stain just makes it too confusing and hard to see when you'll have a large bunch of units.

This is a good point that is generally overlooked!

Go to a greyscale with the blood perhaps? This would be distinguishable. Adding a white border around the token on the damage side as well would make it even more distinguishable.
