I am in need of some royalty-free clip art for a game of mine. Does anyone here have a subscription for clipart.com or other such site? If so, could I give you a list of the pictures I want and could you download them for me? I know it is only $14.95 for a one-week subscription, but the budget is tight and I figured if someone already has a subscription they could help a fellow boardgame designer out.

Creative Commons Clipart?

Have you tried http://www.openclipart.org/ ?

A little hard to navigate, but some alright stuff...

Also try googling 'Free Clipart', but some of those sites seem to be 'As far as I know these are free' type sites.

Microsoft

If you have a copy of Office installed, you should be able to get free clip art from Microsoft: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/clipart/

There you'll find an extensive collection of clip art and photos.

type of clip art

I am looking for some medieval style clip art - both objects and people. None of the free sites that I am aware of are really that good nor offer enough variety.

Dingbat fonts is also good

You can also try dingbat fonts but you only get 2 colors pictures. Generally you can do a lot of things with dingbat especially if you have the right graphic tools to modify them.

Have you tried Googling

Have you tried Googling "medieval clip art"?
http://www.google.com/search?q=medieval+clip+art&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&...

The second link seems pretty good: http://www.godecookery.com/clipart/clart.htm

...and the remaining links provide a lot of additional diversity.

Best of luck on your project,

Jonathan

Thanks

Yeah, I've already gone through all of those. I could probably find one or two pictures here or there that I could use, but I would still be missing some so I was looking for a more comprehensive solution.

I guess I should provide more background as to why I am looking for clip art. I am seriously considering converting "Castle Raiders" to Print-N-Play. However, the current art in the game is cobbled together through various images taken from various websites with a majority of those being copyrighted. So I am looking for free clip art to substitute for what I have. I have a list of about 30 or so images that I would need and it would be good if they are in the same general style (I don't think it would look good to have half of them look cartoony, and the other half look realistic for example). The other option would be to find an artist that could draw some simple pictures, but I can't offer monetary compensation for such an endeavor, so I did not bother to ask...

Apologies for the slight

Apologies for the slight derail but I was wondering what sort of response you'd had submitting Castle Raiders to publishers (which if memory serves you've done?) using copyrighted art in the prototype? I'm in the same boat r.e. a game heavily based on web found images and had got the impression from some people this was a no go submission wise, others seem perfectly fine with the concept though?

Submission guidelines

It is my understanding that you can submit to publishers using whatever images you want. They are not going to publish it as is, but use their own artist. I have only officially submitted to Z-Man and they had no comments on the images used. This may vary based on the publisher though.

Offer for Artist

Since I am still at an impasse concerning art for my game "Castle Raiders", I figured I would make this offer to any artists out there. I will offer 1/2 of any royalties received by posting my game on www.boardgamesnow.com when it is launched in November. The game will be exclusive to "boardgamesnow" for which they stated they would pay higher royalties than the typical 5%. I am not sure of an exact percentage or how much the game would sell for.

As for the art, I need about 30 different pictures ranging from people (archers, pikeman, etc.) to items (bag of gold, gems, shield, etc). The art can be very simplistic as long as it you can tell what it is. I am not looking for anything fancy or time-consuming.

For those who don't know, Castle Raiders has been in the works for a very long time (going on 4 years) and has been playtested extensively and submitted to Zman games. Zman passed on it but it has been vastly improved since then.

If you are at all interested, please PM me and we can discuss particulars.

A few things

On boardgamesnow.com, the royalty rates are not yet fixed.

But there are two different situations, PDF downloads and published games.

However, I can say that for PDF games it will be around 60-70% of the sale price.

For games that get published into board games, the royalty will be higher than 5%, which is around the standard rate in the industry.

As for artwork - you may want to look around at some of your local art schools - try contacting a teacher who has to give students projects...

Good liuck in your search for

Good liuck in your search for an artist mistre.

After two years of trying to get art work for a project I ended up having to put it into the hands of a graphic design studio.

I have never used ifreelance.com but it was suggested as a cheaper option to a studio ay the time.
