Remember when Pente was sold in a tube? There are still some games out there packaged like this. I always considered it kind of cool.

For my first short run self-publish I want to start the same way, with a roll-up that fits within a 3" diameter tube.

I want the greyscale board art to be high-rez photo-silked or otherwise printed onto a memory vinyl or plastic substrate of some kind which settles flat in a minute. I'm uncertain what color the substrate material should be; it'll be covered with two shades of grey and a black border. (Look at my avatar for a rough idea.)

Specs:
Artwork: 15.5" X 15.5 on a 16" X 16" board
Thickness, hopefully 1/8" for substance and nice "knock."
1 ink, screened for tints.

Must be able to accomodate a first micro-run of 50, followed by periodic runs of equal or greater count. Hopefully a reasonable plate creation/setup charge.

I know flexible surface printing is out there and there's a company which can do it from my digital artwork. Like to stay in US to start.

Does anybody have recommendations?

interesting,

I also like it if the actual BOX is the board.

now we are going into travel board game territory

Greg Slam of Pair-of-Dice Games uses tubes and cloths for some of his games. You could ask him, he posts here on bgdf (slam).

I actually made a point of collecting those to see what solutions there were. Unbelievable variety, some very clever pritning/finishing approaches, including magnetized or sticky plastic, foam pieces, et al.

Very cool, Hpox, will do. Thank you for the lead.

VERY cool. Hm. Cloth seems insubstantial for this project, that's my only worry. i need the thickness and the "knock."

But what a great way to make a travel board...

Thanks, Michael.

So nobody has a lead on a good printer who can do greyscale printing on 1/8" thick rubberized mat or vinyl? Gotta be one out there.

The first thing that came to mind is mousepads... Perhaps find someone who can print mousepads inexpensively (with the rubber foam bottoms) and you've probably found your solution.

I did a little digging. You might be hard pressed to find any existing mouse pad that large. I have a large one here that's 17"x11", but you may be hard pressed to find one that's actually 16" square. It never hurts to ask though, I'm sure you're probably looking in the ball park of at least $3 per board though, which is somewhat expensive.

Yeah, I'm expecting that. I'm running around locally looking at signmakers who print on vinyl for signage. Want to keep it stateside for the short run period.

I did some digging a while ago and couldn't find any mouse pads big enough for my needs (I really wanted about 9"x9"). Prices were about $2--4US if I remember correctly, but the minimums weren't bad.

Thanks, jkopena. I'm expecting to pay premium for short run 16 X 16 but it's gotta be done.

Still digging. If I get a solution, it'll show up here.

Funny you mention mousepads; I found a couple that exhibit the kind of flexible solution I'd like. One of the most amusing was the "MouseRug" which is a print of a real Persian rug laminated to leather-- with fringes on the ends, even! Doesn;t have a "thock" kindof surface but absolutely rollable-- like a rug!

Might be useful to someone. They're quite beautiful but very expensive.

I know there's a short-run solution out there somewhere, which delivers a quality product from a greyscale image.[/url]
