Hey y'all,

I recently came up with an early version prototype for Confetti Castles and I need your help!
I am working on an idea that my wife initially had in mind, a game with confetti and secretive choices. After multiple brainstorm and playtest sessions, we are really close to finding the fun. Here is my attempt at an early "thematic" description. Tell me what you think...
THEME INTRO: "Welcome, chosen Crownkeeper. You are tasked as the Royal Crowns' Caretaker to protect the priceless Royal Crystals that rest on the crowns of the Royal Family and reign indescribably above all other sparkly, colorful things. Some say they hold powers beyond even the most daring imaginations.
You are here because there is talk of grave danger afoot within these castle walls and the Royal Family must escape the castle unseen until the threat is gone.
They have entrusted you to conceal their beloved Royal Crystals in the three highest castle towers. If any of these precious crystals were to fall into enemy hands, the kingdom would surely fall into darkness with them.
They say you have what it takes to save us all... Will you prove us right?"

GAME START: Confetti Castles begins with you, Crownkeeper, as you secretly hide the Royal Crystals on three castle towers. Choose wisely, the enemy spies are plotting their tower raids as we speak.
Once all crystals are hidden and plans are set, the screens are lifted and the towers are revealed. You may be rewarded for your valiant efforts, but so might your enemy.
Each turn, a new player is the Crownkeeper until all have had privilege of serving the crown once.
At the end of the round, You join together as Crownkeepers and welcome back the Royal Family as they host a Royal Ball in the honor of the Crownkeepers.
Now, all Crownskeepers are challenged to vie for their rightful place as the Head Crownkeeper, the most sought after position in all the kingdom, (other than the Royal Family, of course). You have one last chance to prove yourself worthy of this magnificent privilege.
Secretly choose the most glorious, confetti-like arrangement of Royal Crystals to present to Their Majesties as they request a new crown like no other. Fulfill their desires perfectly, or just better than all the others, and you will be handsomely rewarded as Head Crownskeeper and thus, win the game.
Long live the Crown, Long live Confetti Castles!

-Added Info- So far, the game

-Added Info-
So far, the game feels kinda like a mix of Mastermind played in a group, but with confetti colors!
-Details-
Player Count: 2-8 Players
Player Ages: 10+
Game Time: 5 Minutes per player
-Components-
Player Screens (2-8)
Confetti Colored, Large Crystals (6 different colors for hiding)
Confetti Colored, Small Crystals (6 different colors for popper)
Poker Chips (Stacked in 3 towers)
Confetti Popper (stores all Confetti Crystals for Royal Party at end game)

So that's all I have so far, without a quick pitch video... If you have any ideas, please feel free to share.

Confetti Castles

I really don't like the word "Confetti" Castles. The name conjures a party with people shooting Confetti fireworks, or when someone gets the golden buzzer on AGT/EGT. The Super bowl or big sporting event. It actually confuses the theme in my opinion.

"Some say they hold powers...." I want to know about these crystals, and what powers they hold. I don't want to risk my life hiding them, if they don't have some incredible power worth dying for. What are the crystals and what is their purpose and power?

It would make more sense if the grave danger was identified, and the that danger was coming to take the castle. It just feels wrong and doesn't make sense that the Royal family must give up their Crystals to me, flee their own castle, while at the same time asking me to hid the most valuable Crystals in the castle where all the danger is. What about using the crystals to protect the castle from this danger by placing the crystals in their towers creating the ultimate protection for the castle......?

Why do they say I have what it takes? Who am I? I want to be the greatest Warrior in the land, or the greatest mage. Maybe I'm the lowly baker, or blacksmith who gets called to do a great and dangerous task and carry crystal for the Royal family. I want to know more about who I am, and why I may have what it takes.

I don't want to fight against my own fellow crowns-keeper's to see who builds the best crown. What about if only one of the Crowns-keeper's is able to protect all the crystals and there by they win the right to build the new crown.

Just some thoughts. Not meant to bust your idea down, but to give you some perspective in which to view your idea. Over all I'd say it sounds like a great start to fun game.

I read your title and thought

I read your title and thought "boy, with some confetti, I sure hope there is a party."

And I was immensely pleased to find that the game ends with a party to welcome back the royal family!

More than anything, I would like a picture of whatever your prototype is. What are you envisioning your castle and towers look like? What is the confetti (Plastic tokens? cardboard chits? playing cards? actual pieces of confetti?)

I think the high level concept is great, and secretly arranging where the confetti is sounds like a game I would play.

Please share more about it. Do you have a rulebook?

PS: If you ever sell this, please put some extra real confetti in the top of the box.

Thank you for the feedback! I

Thank you for the feedback! I will take this into consideration and see what comes next as we get it all working as a game and then flowing as a narrative, if we get that far. So far, it is all just a super early rough draft to the narrative and we are more concerned with nailing down the fun first, then making sure the story really fits strongly together. Please check back in as we update here within the next few weeks or so as we make progress.

Crystal Towers

I know this isn't your priority right now but I've got some time to think of names:

Crystal Towers
Crown Keepers
Forbidden Crystals
Crystal Realms
Crown Forge
Crystal Castle

Another idea this brings to my mind is a sort of Jenga dexterity style game where Crystals are balancing on towers and players trying to save the Crystals must reinforce the towers, while players trying to steal the Crystals destroy the towers. Keep up the good work. I know how enjoyable it is to play-test and develop ideas with your wife. I know I owe everything to her patients and support!!

Yes, I do like some of those. Thanks for thinking about it with me!

I literally owe my initial and continuous dive into game design to her. She was the one that put that wonder in my head at the beginning if I could make a game myself and boy is design such a deep, deep, bottomless, riveting rabbit hole that even Alice in Wonderland has nothing on.

This design is essentially a tribute for her to make something she really loves so we can do it together!

Thanks for thinking about it with me! I wish I had something more concrete for you to actually answer, but your speculations will help me narrow down my narrative for sure, if we even keep one.

Maybe this game could hone in on the Crownkeeping role as the fundamental mechanism, as a microgame of sorts. There are countless paths here, but we can always later develop the world in which they keep the crowns in other games that relate and expound on the theme, while providing that deep, rich connection to each other in mechanism and story. Maybe even tying all together in an immersive playthrough... High hopes with such little to work with so far. Just me dreaming, but thanks for the thoughts. Keep them all coming!
