Toy Wars - Back and Better than Ever

Hi!

Some may remember my “Toy Wars” deck building game concept from way back. I’ve gotten some new and improved ideas for it recently and figured I’d share them on here.

So basically, 10 of a child’s favorite toys (also known as Toy Generals) get into a heated argument over which toy is the child’s absolute favorite and wage war with each other.

Players will construct their decks around the one of 10 Toy Generals and battle it out for supremacy. What I think makes this game different from all other deck builders before it is that it plays like a TCG (similar to Smash Up). The Toy Generals have their own health stats and abilities, and the first person to eliminate the other persons toy general wins. Here’s the fun part - every cards summoning cost is referred to as “coins” and you start out with a good amount of them. But the coins aren’t replenished unless a card says otherwise, so you can “sell” your toys (send them to the discard pile) and get paid back coins equal to their health

The problem: I don’t have very many card concepts. I plan to add Toy Generals, normal Toy cards that go into the main deck and “spells” that aren’t Toys but can do other things. Just need some help brainstorming some ideas

For Inspiration & Brainstorming

I remember your first iteration, and it's pleasing to see you've stuck with it and want to keep developing this. :)

Have a look at the following lists of classic toys, and see what possibilities emerge. Some are brand-names, but you can clearly come up with a knock-off version so you will steer clear of licensing issues.

Thanks so much for all the

Thanks so much for all the sites! That gave me a lot of ideas I never would’ve thought of (I mean seriously, how did I forget about Monkey’s with Cymbals? XD). What do you think is a good number of cards for a base set of a deck building game?

If you've never made a deck-builder before (something I suspect when you go round asking questions like that :D ), then I recommend you keep things on the small side. Do some research on other deck-builder games, and base it off what you find. Here are a couple to have a look at via BGG:

Ascension:

7 Islands:

Airborne Commander:

I must admit that I just went to BGG and looked up the "Pool/Deck-Builder" mechanic, and beyond Ascension I just grabbed a couple random games that seemed smaller-scale.

Hopefully this is useful info...!

I’ve decided on my first 10 Toy Generals

My first 10 Toy Generals have been determined and I figured I’d post them on here along with an explanation for how they work.

Before I begin, it’s important to note what Coins are. Essentially, Coins are a summoning/casting cost, but for Toy Generals, it also doubles as their health. What makes this interesting is that your Toy Generals starting health is all you get in terms of “mana” unless a card says otherwise, meaning that while you could play your whole hand on turn 1, you won’t have much you can do later on in the game because you can’t play anything else. Plus, your toy general won’t have very much health if you do. So, without further ado...

Theodore (Teddy Bear) - Fur Coat (Protection)
Coins - 25
Every Toy General is going to have a general theme. Theodore’s is Fur Coat, which can give you protection from a certain kind of toy (whether that’s wood, plastic, tin, etc.). Every general will also have an additional ability they can use by paying coins that falls within their archetype. For Theodore, you can pay 2 coins to give him protection from a toy of his choice until the end of the turn (protection means they can’t be attacked, dealt damage by or affected by that kind of toy in any form)

Commander Johnson (GI Joe) - Reinforcements (Amass)
Coins - 20
Commander Johnson, for 1 coin, can play a 2/1 Soldier toy token.

Tiffany (Barbie) - Determination (Vigilance)
Coins - 30
For 2 coins, Tiffany can give one of your toys Determination until your next turn (essentially functions like Vigilance in MTG)

Superior Semi (Transformer) - Transform
Coins - 30
For 5 coins, you can give Superior Semi 5/?, with the question mark being equal to his health

Brick (Lego) - Restore
Coins - 25
At the end of each players turn, Brick gains 1 health/coin or can give a target toy 2 additional health

Blifold the Barbarian (He-Man) - Buff (+1/+1 Counter)
Coins - 25
For 2 coins, you can give either Blifold or one of your other toys a +1/+1 counter

The Egg (Hatchimal Egg) - Hatch
Coins - 40
After 7 turns, if The Egg still has health, it turns into a 10/10 Toy with Boost (essentially like Haste or Charge from MTG and Hearthstone respectively)

Carl the Potato (Mr. Potato Head) - Lose a Limb/Removal
Coins - 10 (10 additional “limb” counters)
Any time Carl is attacked and has limb counters, you can remove one of those, destroy an enemy toy and end the battle step

Mustang (Hot Wheels) - Boost (Haste/Charge)
Coins - 20
Pay 1 coin to deal 2 damage to the enemy Toy General

Man of Monopolies (Monopoly) - Collect
Coins - 35
At the end of every turn, you gain 1 coin. You can pay 10 coins to deal 5 damage to all toys on the field

Curious to hear what you guys think so far, if the concept of mana being health is good or stupid
