Odds n' Ends

I’ll be honest, I’ve been putting off this blog post for some time now. I find the more engrossed I get with my work the less I want to take time away from it. Since alot of BGDF posts Ive been reading discuss work flow methods, design methods and environments I thought I’d make a post about mine.

I write at a desk featuring a few plants, a large open window, and a modest selection of miniatures. Also on the desk are a number of items that pertain to my work, tape measure, dice, drawing pads etc.

I begin work at 6AM sharp every day other than Friday. Friday is play test day and I spend the bulk of the mourning writing (until roughly 11 AM) then collect my work for the testers who arrive around 1:30. Most play-tests run until 10PM though some rare games may run slightly longer. I conclude my work when my Wife comes home from work around 4PM.

I prefer rather “epic” music when I write. I find profound or emotional music often helps me fuel whatever it is I’m working on. As an example, when writing about the Queen of my steam punk world I was referred to a band called Flyleaf by my wife. Prior to the referral I had no experience with it. I did find the aggression of the female vocals excellent for formulating a strong female leader.

Evokes perfect emotion, both desperate and full of rage. Funny enough my preference in music is actually classical, heh. Who would’ve guessed?

Roughly three times a week I spend about two hours at the gym. I’m fairly consistent with this but have only been once this week.

After making dinner for myself and the wife I spend the rest of the evening takeing notes. Anything can force a sudden idea or create a spark. After spending a great deal of my early twenties discussing my profound ideas I thought it would be best I start recording them. As it turns out my more youthful concepts failed the test of time and have been lost to my memory. Perhaps they weren’t so profound?

Meh, that’s my day. Well on to the progress report I suppose. As I turn the corner of yet another book edition I have finally begun my translation of notes into actual material. As it turns out, writing expansion material is a lot more fun than I would’ve initially guessed. After such a massive amount of time spent working on the main book I felt I was so burned out id never get anything done on the expansions. Now, as I begin my work I find myself invigorated. Allowing myself to tell the story of factions I'd only hinted at in the rulebook is both freeing and intoxicating. I feel as though I’m sharing some great secret with all the world.
