Suspense & Decision magazine

Hi, to one and all!

A couple of months back, I started publishing a PDF magazine whose focus is turn-based gaming. My primary focus, personally, tends to be on PBM (play by mail) gaming, and the ancestral descendants, thereof.

However, technically, board games tend to be turned-based gaming experiences, also.

Anyway, I've used this site for a while, though my rate of frequency with using it varies, increasing at some times, and decreasing at other times.

Even still, if anyone here has a completed game that they want to advertise in this magazine, whether issue # 3 (which gets published later tonight) or any future issue. I'll give you a good advertising rate - free. I am trying to add a few pages of text articles to the end of the current issue, and having an extra ad or two to accompany the text articles would help maintain visual balance, I think.

The circulation of the magazine is small. How small? No idea, but pretty darned small. But, maybe - just maybe - somebody that otherwise would not encounter your game might just do so.

If interested, e-mail a link to whatever images that I can choose from, in order to advertise your game. Completed games only, please! For any games currently in progress, and which are unfinished, I would prefer to incorporate coverage of those games into the magazine, only if an interview or article accompanies them.

Thanks for any interest! You may reach me by e-mail at:

About your magazine

I really like the idea of offering a *FREE* ad for a game... However I might be interested in *publishing* an article about my game... Specifically what I am thinking is something to highlight the game and the various parties that have/will be involved with making the game a reality.

Oddly what I find cool is that TGC (The Game Crafter) has given me an extension to get my prototypes selected by a publisher. The goal is to publish a *Featured Article* about TGC, my prototypes (and game) and the publisher that will be producing the game.

I would maybe be interested in having that *article* in the magazine. Obviously this would be pending your own editorial review of it...

Or maybe you might be interested in *interviewing* for the process of writing an article for your magazine. And we would of course then run that article through TGC... Maybe we could establish a line of questioning and then I could review it to ensure we discuss all parties involved in the process... It's your magazine, I'm just stating how we could arrange for topics that could be "debated" or "explained" in some detail without being to wordy or take up too much space, etc.

Let me know if you would be interested.

The game is "Tradewars - Homeworld". And I have a long-running blog about the game on this website talking about the progression and various aspects of the game from playtesting results to dealing with publisher to changes in the various versions of the game, etc.

Sure, I'm interested. The big

Sure, I'm interested.

The big name games get lots of coverage. I'm more interested in covering true independents, especially those that are flying under the radar, or who are trying to get their game's name out there.

Publicity

Grimfinger, if you want to increase the circulation of your magazine, you might mention the title of it, if not the website/webpage.

Right, you are.

The title of the magazine is Suspense & Decision, which I listed in the title of this thread. The website is PlayByMail.Net.

http://playbymail.net/

The section of the site's forum dedicated to the magazine, itself, is found at:

I've used the BGDF site for several years, now. My profile says that I have been a member here for 5 years and 25 weeks, although I did use the previous incarnation of this site, back when. Game design, itself, interests me, and my interest in PBM gaming goes back almost three decades. PBM gaming and board gaming are both heavily oriented toward turn-based gaming.

Board games tend to be more visual experiences, compared to PBM games. PBM is heavily imagination-dependent. Not that board games aren't, but not quite to the degree that PBM games are, I don't think.

Anyway, I would just like to shine a spotlight on some of the independent board game designers' handiwork. My interest extends beyond just finished board games. Indeed, the design process, itself, is often of more interest to me than a given finished board game product.

Forum threads for specific issues of Suspense & Decision can be found, as follows:

Issue # 1

Issue # 2

Issue # 3
http://playbymail.net/mybb/showthread.php?tid=815

Issue # 3 is the January 2014 issue, and is our most recently published issue. The rate of frequency of publication for the magazine is monthly. The magazine is free. I publish it in PDF format, with the caveat that anyone is free to print it or share it with others, in either digital or print formats.

Coverage of board games or board game design are not what prompted me to start the magazine. While I do like PBM games very much, I also like board games a lot, also. Hence, why I posted about this, here.

Submission deadline for Issue # 4

The deadline for submissions for issue # 4 of Suspense & Decision magazine is February 20th, 2014.

Articles, reviews, photographs, and other submissions by BGDF and its users are invited.

Well, it looks like no one on

Well, it looks like no one on the BGDF site had anything about their board game designs that they wanted to submit, for issue # 4. The issue is mostly compiled, already. However, I don't actually publish each issue until closer to the end of the month, usually.

Accordingly, if any of you board game designers have anything to submit pertaining to your board game design undertakings, such as a photo of some aspect of your game in progress, I may still be able to include it in issue# 4. There's no charge for it. Just be sure to send me a link to include along with your photo(s), so that readers who find it to be interesting will be able to find their way to your work in progress.

Also, if the BGDF staff want to toss an ad for their site together, send it to me, and I'll include it, as well. The same for The Game Crafter folks. I haven't ordered anything from them (yet), but I do like what they do.

Interested parties should send submissions to: GrimFinger@GrimFinger.Net

Ironing out details

Hi Grim,

I'm still in the process of reviewing all aspects of my Deck-Building Game (DBG) "Tradewars - Homeworld". When I complete the overhaul of the game (revising all of the details), I'll certainly let you know and then we can figure out what is the best issue for the article.

We can also align it with The Game Crafter's Featured Article so that the article can be referenced from their site also (gives you the opportunity to get some TGC people interested - and could be a good plug for future games!)

But I haven't forgot - still ironing out the details! :)

Issue # 4 is out!

Issue # 4 of Suspense & Decision magazine has been published, and is available as a free download at the following link:

I would really like to include something board game related for our next issue, if any of you are interested.

Issue # 5 looking for articles!

The deadline for submissions for issue # of Suspense & Decision magazine is March 20th, 2014.

Articles, reviews, photographs, and other submissions by BGDF and its users are invited.

ISSUE # 10 LOOMS JUST OVER THE HORIZON!

The deadline for submissions for issue # 10 of Suspense & Decision magazine is August 20th, 2014.
