Do you like Dice?

I'm creating a fast and ligt strategy game and i'm wondering if a player would prefer the use of cards (that really make the game strategic, because of the hand management) or special dices with different propability for the result of the action done by the players?

The players depending of their situation in the game would have the choice to use different dices, safe dice (less powerfull) or risky dice?

How do you feel about games that use dices? Is playing with probability a fun strategy or you feel that luck driven game stinks??

Have you ever played a game called Fill or Bust? It's great a dice game where you try to complete whatever the card tells you. Even though it's random as far rolling dice goes, I still think it's a lot of fun, especially for 2 players because it's fast paced and it has the classic thing that all dice games have, since it's the player who is rolling the dice, they still feel that somehow it's a skill game. And when you throw in decisions like Yatzee where you decide do want 3 of a kind or a straight, I think it adds more to the feeling that it's still skill based.

My guess is you will be all over the board with people who either like it or don't. I wouldn't shy away from it because of that. Instead, playtest it over and over and see how people react. Yatzee is still a top selling game, but it would be interesting to see how many people on this board play it ... I know I don't.

Either way would be a matter of probability. With dice, you have the probability of a needed outcome. With cards, you have the probability of needed cards appearing. Each calls for a unique play style. I personally prefer dice in situations like this. I prefer to know that the results I need are within reach. With cards, I usually end up "dry" and lacking the cards that I need at the times I need them. Maybe I'm not very good at hand management, but that's my personal preference.

One thing I would toss in the mix, dice might tend to be faster. And if your goal is to create fast and light game, the cards might slow the game down a little. Since players would now have choices to make.

Of course this is also a tradeoff, make choices that might help add more strategy, or a random roll the dice to help reduce the decision processes involved in your game(hopefully making the game move along).

If you really want the winner to be determined based on "how well" they play, or an optimal strategy, dice might not be the best option.

Not knowing the feel of your game, I think you might want to play around with both a dice and card version. Then through playtest decide which version you(and/or others) seem to like best.

I don't know if this helps but I will add it.

The strategy of the cards is the idea of having to 'hand manage'. The advantage of dice is speed. I wonder if you could do something like a dice management thing.
So you role your set of dice ( similar to drawing cards). You use dice from the pool as needed, rerolling the ones you use. So the hand management gets in with having to choose when you use what dice, but the speed still exists.

That's an avenue i will try to explore :)
