sports on a board

Hi all. just joined but have been watching and reading for a year now.
I have a concept i'd like to share. It's a racing game (run/ bike/etc). I'll use running. Players pick their strong area, either flat, uphill or downhill. eg uphill. The players then decide their strategy as to when to attack the race. They choose 20 cards from the 3 piles, eg 10 uphill, 5 flat, 5 downhill.
They can only play each card in the corresponding area on the board.
All the players move by using a community die but can play their game cards whenever they want to get ahead. they can stick to their race plan but can also see what the others are doing. Once a player has used all the're race cards they can only use the community die to moive forward. first one to the finish wins.

Welcome to the forum.

What sort of effects do the race cards have? Are do they simply let you move ahead extra spaces when in the appropriate area? If so, how can the result be any different than the 'strategy' of "play all your cards as soon as you get to the area that allows them"? Whoever has the greatest total in their hand at the beginning will win the race every time.

I agree and maybe that could be for the family version, players just drop their cards and move their pieces along. for the adult version, the board has bonus card spots along the track. To get a bonus card you must land on the spot alone. If you are playing teams then you can shadow other players by following them everywhere for as long as you can. Players hide their cards so you the other don't see there value; 1,2,3. you can play these cards anywhere during the race. Again it is the first to the finish wins.

hello! i don't want this to be discouraging, but your idea sounds fairly similar to an excellent bicycle racing game called 'Um Reifenbreit'. in that game you control a team of four bike riders and have a hand full of cards- two for each rider except the team leader who has four, plus four wild cards. on your turn you can either roll two dice and move that amount or substitute one or both dice with a card (the cards are either 5 or 6) to better control your movement. there are also excellent drafting and breakaway rules and different terrain, uphill, downhill, and cobblestones.
you should at least take a look at this game as comparisons would almost be inevitable and you can see what you do and don't like about the system and perhaps improve it.
it won the spiel de jas back in '93 (i think?) so if you find it too similar to your idea than you can congradulate yourself on an excellent concept! (if a little late :) [that happens to me alllll the time])
